Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Asheville, NC - Both bloops and blasts doomed the Augusta GreenJackets in a 6-3 loss to the Asheville Tourists on a chilly Monday night at McCormick Field.
In the first inning, Jared Clark's solo home run gave the Tourists an early lead. After Hector Sanchez doubled off the wall in right-center to tie things in the second, Nathan Hines hit the first of two bloops that victimized the GreenJackets. His soft line-drive double past Chris Dominguez at third plated two runs that put the Tourists out in front for good in the second.
Orlando Sandoval added a valuable insurance run in the sixth to push the Asheville lead to three. In the seventh, new GreenJacket Sharlon Schoop singled in a run with one out to cut the deficit to one and later came home on an error after a Ryan Lollis single.
Asheville put the game on ice in the eighth inning, opening things with back-to-back walks following two quick outs. Hines struck again with a flare single to left - the second of his bloop hits to yield a run - to make it a 5-3 game. With the bases full, Eliezer Mesa drew a walk to bring Asheville's lead to three. Charles Ruiz delivered a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth save of the year, one day after blowing the save in the nightcap of a doubleheader for the Tourists.
After early struggles, both Nick Schnaitmann and Jorge Bucardo delivered solid starts for the Tourists and GreenJackets respectively. Schnaitmann (2-2) fired seven innings and allowed three runs, two earned, to get the win. He scattered seven hits and walked two while striking out three. Bucardo (0-2) settled down after a rough first two innings, allowing five hits in six innings. He yielded four runs - three earned - and walked two with six strikeouts.
In Wednesday morning's series finale, Augusta sends BJ Salsbury (2-1, 4.67) to the mound against Asheville righty Juan Gonzalez (0-0, 5.14). With the morning start time, tomorrow's game will be broadcast exclusively on the internet. First pitch will come at 11:05 a.m. in Asheville with the pregame action beginning at 10:50 a.m. on www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
