Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC - Sean Black pitched a career-best 7.1 innings, allowing only two earned runs, as the Charleston RiverDogs defeated the Rome Braves, 3-2 in South Atlantic League action Sunday evening in front of a crowd of 2,577 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The RiverDogs have now won three games in a row to improve to 8-10, while Rome has dropped its fourth straight in falling to 7-11.

Black (1-1), a former Seton Hall Pirate, enjoyed his best start of the year allowing just five total hits while retiring 10 consecutive batters between the second and fifth innings. The Mt. Laurel, N.J. native walked four and equaled a season-high four strikeouts in the triumph.

Charleston scored first for the fifth straight game taking a 1-0 lead in the second on Emerson Landoni's RBI single to centerfield.

Faulty defense led to two unearned runs scoring for the RiverDogs in the sixth, as the lead grew to 3-0. With two outs, Kyle Higashioka's pop-up was dropped by Rome second-sacker Chris Lovett allowing the inning to continue. Higashioka then scored on Taylor Grote's opposite-field double into the left-field corner for a 2-0 count. Landoni followed with a RBI single to left -- his third hit of the game - to score Grote, which spelled the end for Rome starter Brett Oberholtzer (0-2), who tossed 6.0 innings and surrendered eight hits in the loss.

Rome finally scored twice in the eighth on a RBI triple by Kyle Rose and an infield RBI single by Jordan Kreke, but Francisco Rondon set down the final five batters over 1.2 scoreless frames to earn his first save since 2006.

The four-game series continues Monday night at 7:05 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. Charleston sends highly touted New York Yankees prospect right-hander Jose Ramirez (0-0, 2.60) to the mound to face the former Yankees prospect Arodys Vizcaino (2-1, 4.24), who was sent to the Atlanta Braves in the offseason as part of the trade for Major League pitcher Javier Vazquez.
