Tonight: The first-place Gnats play game two of a four game set with the Hickory Crawdads, and the second game of an eight-game homestand. Savannah has won four of its last five, and eight of its last ten games. The Gnats are alone in first place, by half a game, because both of the teams the Gnats were tied with entering play on Saturday, the Lexington Legends and the Augusta GreenJackets, were postponed by rain.
Last Night: The Gnats beat the Hickory Crawdads 4-2 behind Jimmy Fuller, who gave up two runs in the first inning, but settled in to throw eight innings. It was the second time this season that Jimmy Fuller struck out nine in an eight-inning performance. At the plate, Alonzo Harris' RBI double in the Gnats' three-run fourth gave Savannah a 3-2 lead. SS Wilmer Flores was 2-4 with a pair of doubles.
Now Pitching: Mark Cohoon will make his fourth Sand Gnats start of the year. He is tied for the league lead in wins with three and is 12th in the SAL with a 1.53 ERA. He spent all of 2009 with Brooklyn in the New York-Penn League where he was 9-2 with a 2.15 ERA in 14 starts. He fanned 70 and walked 20 in 92 innings. His 2.15 ERA was 6th in the League and the Mets recognized him with the team's Sterling Award as the Cyclones MVP. In 2008 with Savannah, Cohoon was 2-2 with a 3.82 ERA in seven starts after moving directly from the Kingsport Mets, skipping over Brooklyn.
Wilmer Goes Wild: Gnats shortstop Wilmer Flores has hit safely in nine straight games over which time he is hitting .395 (15 H/38 AB) with seven doubles, two home runs, 13 RBI and four walks and six strikeouts which adds up to a .737 slugging percentage. Flores had just three homeruns all of last season with Savannah. Through 17 games, Flores has nine doubles and two home runs. Last season, he picked up his ninth double of the year on June 10th, in his 49th game of the year and his second HR on June 16, in his 55th game of the year. Flores is fourth in the SAL in batting average (.368) and seventh in slugging (.588) and is the fourth hardest player in the league to strikeout (12 PA/SO).
Last Ten: The Gnats are 8-2 in their last ten games with a .283 team batting average and a 2.76 team ERA. As a team, the Gnats have scored 68 runs in their games, averaging 6.8 runs/game.
Roster Update: Saturday, C Michael Moras was assigned to AA Binghamton where C Mike Nickeas was placed on the disabled list with a strained right hamstring.
Who's Hot: Rafael Fernandez has hit in seven straight, Alonzo Harris and Kai Gronauer in six straight each. Harris is hitting .500 (9-for-18) over his streak with one double, one triple, one homer and seven RBI. Gronauer is hitting .426 (11-for-26) with three doubles and four RBI.
Who's Not: 1B Jeff Flagg is hitting just .097 (3-for-31) in his last eight games.... Jefry Marte is 1-for-15 (.067) since returning from the disabled list.
Four for Sure: Savannah is 11-1 when scoring four or more runs and 0-5 when scoring three runs or fewer. When Gnats pitching allows fewer than four runs, the team is 9-3.
Master Moundsmen: Gnats pitching leads the SAL with a 2.62 ERA (44 ER/151 IP). Savannah has allowed the fewest runs (50) and hits (122) in the SAL. Savannah's seven wild pitches are tied for the fewest in the league.
