April 25, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Asheville, NC - In their most resilient effort of the season, the Augusta GreenJackets scored four times in the seventh inning to overcome a two-run deficit and earn a 7-5 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader against the Asheville Tourists. The Jackets had previously won a 7-5 contest in the opener, completing the twinbill sweep with the nightcap win.
In the opener the GreenJackets led first with a Nick Liles single in the third, but Asheville struck back to tied things with a run in the bottom half of the inning. In the fourth, Joe Sanders greeted Augusta starter Kyle Vazquez with a solo home run to give the Tourists a 2-1 lead through four.
The Jackets scored five unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth, capped by Chris Dominguez's solo homer in the sixth. Asheville mounted a furious rally in their half of the sixth in an inning that saw them benefit from two walks, two Jackets errors and two hits. Jose Casilla got the final out of the sixth to preserve the GreenJackets advantage.
Tommy Joseph's RBI double in the seventh added some breathing room as Jason Jarvis nailed down his fourth save of the year in the 7-5 GreenJackets win. Kyle Vazquez (2-0) allowed two runs in five clean innings. He allowed five hits and three walks while striking out two. Asheville starter Wes Musick (2-2) took the loss for the Tourists. The GreenJackets got two hits apiece from Ryan Cavan, Nick Liles, Juan Martinez and Joseph.
In the nightcap, the GreenJackets led 2-1 through one on the strength of Joseph's two-run home run before Asheville batted around in a four-run fifth. Chris Heston was cruising through four innings before yielding five straight hits to open the fifth inning. He allowed eight hits and five runs in his shortest start of the year.
The GreenJackets went back to work in the sixth as Luke Anders hit a solo home run to cut the Asheville lead to two. Then in the seventh, Daniel Cook's one-out double made it a one-run game before Joseph tied it with a base hit to left. Pinch-runner Kyle Mach became caught in a rundown between first and second to allow Cook to steal home and give Augusta a 6-5 lead right before Anders' second home run in as many innings, a solo shot to put the Jackets ahead 7-5.
Jason Jarvis got two groundouts and a pop out to earn his second save of the night and make a winner out of Jose Valdez (2-0), who struck out one in two-thirds of an inning. Asheville closer Charles Ruiz (0-1) took the loss for the Tourists after his second blown save of the year.
The GreenJackets and Tourists continue the series on Monday night with Jorge Bucardo (0-1, 2.25) facing Nick Schnaitmann (1-2, 9.24) in a matchup of righties. First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. in Asheville with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW-AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
