Missouri River Otters News Release
St. Charles, MO --- The Missouri River Otters of the United Hockey League are proud to announce that the Funny Bone U.S.A. Charity Jersey Auction on Saturday, November 5, raised more than $10,000 for the Kilo Diabetes Foundation. Included in that was a $5,000 bid that River Otters owner Mike Shanahan Sr. made on one of the specialty jerseys.
"It was a wonderful evening and we would like to thank the River Otters and the Funny Bone Comedy Club for lending their support to the Foundation in our quest to find a cure for diabetes," said Joe Vilmain, executive director of the Kilo Diabetes Foundation.
During Saturday's game, all of the River Otters players, along with head coach Kevin Kaminski and Oscar the River Otter, wore the special jerseys. The jerseys were auctioned off after the game by auctioneer Glen Head. Aside from the jersey that Shanahan Jr. bid $5,000 on, the highest seller was Frank Littlejohn's jersey, which sold for $1,000.
The Kilo Diabetes Foundation conducts research to understand how diabetes affects the body and to develop medications and interventions to prevent vascular damage and diabetes-induced complications of blindness, heart attacks, strokes, nerve damage and kidney failure.
Saturday was the first of four River Otters jersey auctions set for the 2005-06 season, with the others as follows: Saturday, December 10, Vantage Homes Holiday Jersey Auction to benefit Habitat For Humanity; Friday, February 10, Alpha Packaging Valentine's Day Jersey Auction to benefit the American Heart Association; Friday, March 17, Laclede Gas St. Patrick's Day Jersey Auction to benefit Dollar Help.
