April 6, 2013 - NBA G League (G League)
Cleveland Charge News Release
The Canton Charge overcame a 13-point deficit to top the Reno Bighorns, 104-100, in the penultimate game of the 2012-13 regular season at the Reno Events Center on Friday night. Canton improved their mark to 29-20 on the year, while Reno dropped to 16-33.
Reno pulled ahead 26-22 after the first quarter thanks in part to forcing six Canton turnovers for eight points as well as a strong 10-4 run in the final 3:42 of the period. The Bighorns were able to extend their lead in the second due to hitting 11-of-20 attempts from the field for 55% while limiting the Charge to just 39% of their own shots, as the home team led 52-42 at the half.
Facing their largest deficit of the night at 13 points early in the third, Canton bounced back with a 16-2 run over a span of 4:51 to pull ahead 60-59 for their first advantage since the game's opening quarter. Back-and-forth play ensued for the remainder of the third with seven more lead changes and three ties, as Reno eventually pulled back ahead for the 79-76 lead entering the final period.
Brady Morningstar proved to be an X factor off the bench in the fourth by hitting 4-of-6 shots for 10 points, with his final bucket proving to be the most crucial. With the game tied at 98-98 with 1:13 remaining, Morningstar came off a pick on the left elbow during an inbounds play to nail a sweet 13-foot jumper to give Canton the lead. Arinze Onuaku swatted a shot on the ensuing Reno possession and collected a rebound before completing the trifecta by hitting both free-throws on the other end to put the game away.
The Charge were led by Kyle Weaver's game-high 29 points that included hitting 12-of-13 free throws as well as four rebounds, six assists and two steals in 40 minutes. Morningstar finished with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting with five rebounds and two steals in 24 minutes. Arinze Onuaku notched his 19th double-double of the season by netting 10 points and grabbing 13 boards in 27 minutes. Ryan Rossiter provided 13 points, nine rebounds and a block in 27 minutes. Canton dished out 27 assists on their 37 made field goals in tonight's game.
Reno had seven of their eight players in uniform score double-digit points, led by Mo Charlo's 18 on 6-of-9 shooting with seven rebounds and two blocks in 35 minutes. Samardo Samuels scored all 16 of his points in the first half, adding nine rebounds and two steals in 34 minutes. Darnell Jackson poured in 16 points with seven rebounds and two steals in 29 minutes of relief off the bench. The Bighorns surrendered just 11 turnovers for six points on the night as a team.
The two teams will wrap up the 2012-13 regular season campaign tomorrow night in the Reno Events Center at 10:00 p.m.
