March 16, 2016 - NBA G League (G League)
Cleveland Charge News Release
The Canton Charge (28-15), presented by SecureData 365 and powered by the Cleveland Cavaliers, defeated the Maine Red Claws (28-16), 130-123, in a potential Eastern Conference playoff preview at the Canton Memorial Civic Center on Wednesday night. The loss for Maine halted a season-high seven game win streak.
Both teams failed to protect the ball in the opening stanza, committing 13 combined turnovers in the first 12 minutes. Canton capitalized on Maine's miscues, creating quality looks as they shot 74% from the field on 14-of-19 shooting. Maine took advantage of the forced errors by scoring 10 points in transition and shooting an equally efficient 70% from the field on 14-of-20 shooting in the period. After trailing by as many as 12, Canton cut the lead to two with the score 34-32 at the end of the period. Canton's John Holland and Michael Stockton each scored 11 points in the quarter to lead Canton. Maine's front court counterparts Omari Johnson and Levi Randolph combined for 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting.
The two teams continued their torrid pace shooting, with Canton shooting 68% in the second quarter and Maine shooting 66% respectively. Behind Atlanta Hawks' assignee Lamar Patterson's 12 second quarter points, Canton went on to lead by as many as nine in the second period before a late quarter run by Maine knotted the game at 64-64 heading into halftime. Maine forward Malcolm Miller scored nine points in the second quarter, while Randolph added eight more to give him 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting entering the break.
Trailing 83-77 with 6:01 left in the third, a 6-0 Charge run spurred by a pair of John Holland free throws gave the advantage back to Canton at 89-83 with 2:04 remaining. A Nick Minnerath layup would give Canton its largest lead of the quarter at nine before a Randolph jumper cut right before the buzzer cut Canton's lead to 95-88 entering the fourth.
Canton maintained the lead through the entire fourth quarter, pushing their advantage to as many as 20. Canton moved the ball efficiently, assisting on 9-of-12 field goals in the final period.
Seven Charge players scored in double figures, with three players scoring 20 or more points, paced by Holland's season-high 27 points on 9-of-15 shooting and five assists in 31 minutes of action. Canton guard Michael Stockton added a season-high 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting while dishing seven assists in 36 minutes. Chris Crawford provided a boost off the bench, posting his first double-double of the season with 13 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds in 35 minutes. Sir'Dominic Pointer added 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting in 23 minutes.
Maine was led by Corey Walden's 28 point, seven rebound and eight assists performance. Malcolm Miller added 27 points on 11-of-12 shooting in 39 minutes. Levi Randolph played a game-high 43 minutes, scoring 25 points on 12-of-19 shooting.
Canton will hit the road for a back-to-back set of games at the Sioux Falls Skyforce (Miami Heat affiliate) beginning Friday, March 18th at 8:00 p.m. The Charge return home to host the Delaware 87ers (Philadelphia 76ers affiliate) on Wednesday, March 23rd at 8:00 p.m. For more information and to purchase tickets, head to www.CantonCharge.com.
