Ottawa Champions News Release
OTTAWA - The Ottawa Champions made a series of roster moves during their road trip to Trois-Rivieres this week, including the signing of a familiar face to the Can-Am League.
Seasoned RHP Edilson Alvarez joins the Champions pitching staff after concluding a tour of the league with the Can-Am travel teams. He was a member of the Salina Stockade and Hollywood Stars for their Canadian schedules.
The Champions selected Alvarez in the Stars dispersal draft, which was conducted Wednesday afternoon through the Can-Am League's head office in Durham N.C.
Alvarez, a native of Santiago, Dominican Republic, is now the only Dominican national on the Ottawa roster. He will slot into the fifth spot of the rotation, according to Champions manager Hal Lanier. The corresponding move to the bullpen will be determined at a later date.
Through his tour of the Can-Am League, Alvarez established himself as the travel teams' ace. He made four starts, finishing with a record of 2-0 and a 4.97 ERA. During Salina's trip through the nation's capital, Alvarez recorded his first win of the campaign over the Champions in a tight 8-6 contest.
This isn't his first tour through the Can-Am League - Alvarez is a familiar foe for Champions batters. He spent four seasons with the Trois-Rivieres Aigles, with his best statistical season coming in 2016. He tossed 114.2 innings, registering an ERA of 2.67. That was the best of any Can-Am starting pitcher that season.
WOLFSBERG RELEASED
In the corresponding move to make room for Alvarez on the Champions 22-man roster, Ottawa released INF Ryan Wolfsberg. The Lincoln, Mass. native was signed to a contract Tuesday.
In his lone game as a Champion on Wednesday in Trois-Rivieres, the infielder went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.
Ottawa now returns home for a brief weekend series against the New Jersey Jackals, before heading back on the road. The set includes a Canada Day matinee, and pre-holiday fireworks on Saturday night.
