Champions Fall in Wild Contest against Jackals
June 29, 2018 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Ottawa Champions News Release
OTTAWA - The Ottawa Champions went blow-for-blow with the New Jersey Jackals, but ultimately fell to the Jackals 6-4 in 10 innings.
"You have to play nine innings and do the fundamental things well," said manager Hal Lanier following the loss. "We had opportunities to win the game in nine innings. We have to make the plays, period."
The Champions were trailing 3-2 in the seventh inning and needed someone to step up, and it was SS Daniel Bick who rose to the occasion. Bick crushed a two-run jack to left field, giving the Champions the lead.
However, the Jackals showed why they are the third-place team in the Can-Am League, tying the game in the top of the ninth and then winning it in the tenth inning. RHP Daniel Carela was a hard-luck loser, as he gave up two runs in the tenth off an errant play at first base and a wild pitch.
Bick paced the Champions offence on the day by going 3-for-5 with the homer. CF Chase Harris also had a good game, going 3-for-3 with a run-saving, leaping grab at the wall in the ninth inning.
RHP Edilson Alvarez made his Champions debut, throwing two innings of scoreless ball.
The Champions will have a chance to even the three-game series with the Jackals tomorrow, Saturday June 30 at 7:05 p.m. The series will wrap-up on Canada Day with the first pitch being scheduled for 1:35 p.m.
Tickets for the CANADA DAY GAME featuring Ottawa Senators prospects, and the rest of the Champions schedule can be purchased by visiting www.ottawachampions.com, in-person at the RCGT Park box office, or by calling 613-745-BALL (2255).
