Champions Lose Both Games of a Double-Header against Capitales

Game 1

The Champions dropped the first game of the double-header against the Capitales, 2-1.

Phillippe Aumont tossed his second complete game of the season, striking out eight batters and allowing two earned runs on seven hits.

"Phil wasn't with us on the road trip, so he came in and made one mistake and got the loss for it," said Champions manager Sébastien Boucher. "So it's not a fun outing for him when that happens but at the same time he understands what we've gone through in the last few days."

Brian Portelli made it 2-1 with his first bomb of the season, a solo shot over the left field wall, but the rest of the Ottawa bats couldn't get anything going.

Ex-Champion Tyson Gillies opened the scoring early for the Capitales, crushing a two-run homer over the right field wall in the top of the first.

Vinny Guglietti made a great defensive play in the sixth inning, diving to catch a shallow popup and then hustling back to dive into first to make the double play.

Game 2

Brian Portelli put the Champions on the board yet again, driving in Guglietti to make it 5-1.

Rian Kiniry made it 4-0 in the third with a two-run RBI double that scored Tyson Gillies and Brett Sidall. Corey Bass made it 5-0 on the next pitch, driving in Kiniry and chasing Lepore from the game.

Lepore got into a jam early, loading the bases in the second inning with no outs. He walked Brandon Fischer to score Brett Sidall to make it 1-0 but got bailed out by his defense. David Salgueiro popped out to left and Eduard Pinto made the throw all the way to home where Andy Mocahbee made the tag for the double play to end the inning.

The Champions played late into the night in New Jersey yesterday and only got back to Ottawa at 10 a.m. Friday. Boucher said that, although he didn't want to make excuses, fatigue was a factor.

"When you play five games in 60 hours almost, it's definitely going to be a factor," said Boucher. "It was a long game last night and the turnaround was quick. I can't blame the guys for being tired and having a lack of life on the field tonight."

The two teams meet again tomorrow at RCGT Park at 7 p.m.
