Champions Dig Deep for Resilient Walk off Win over Miners

Ottawa Champions News Release

OTTAWA - Heroics came from a familiar place for the Ottawa Champions on Monday night. Longtime Champion INF Steve Nyisztor hit a walk-off single to complete a three-run, ninth inning Ottawa comeback over Sussex County Miners.

The team was down 7-4 going into the ninth inning, and took the game 8-7.

It was Nyisztor's first game back in the lineup after suffering a groin injury two weeks ago, and he made it count when it mattered the most.

The game-winning single pleased Champions manager Hal Lanier.

"It would have been easy three runs down going into the ninth to just lay down," the delighted skipper said after the game. "But we had some quality at bats and big base hits with people in scoring position."

The stage was set after the eighth inning, with the score at 5-4 Miners. At first, the situation didn't appear to be too kind to the Champions after the Miners padded their lead in the top half of the inning.

INF Martin Figueroa was hit by a pitch in the leadoff spot, a sac bunt and single then moved him to third. OF Rubi Silva drove him in with an RBI single. C Luis Alen then mustered up a second RBI single, giving Sussex County a 7-4 lead.

But despite the larger deficit, Ottawa was on a mission in the bottom half of the inning.

With RHP Alex Demchak in the game, Ottawa hit him hard right off the bat. INF Daniel Bick and DH Sebastien Boucher kicked off the inning on the right note with back-to-back singles, before INF Jordan Caillouet roped a double into the right-centre alley to cut Sussex County's lead to 7-5.

OF Steve Brown then continued the hit train to make it a one-run game, and C Zak Colby's sac fly tied the game.

Nyisztor then won it with his ground ball single to left field.

Ottawa returns to action Tuesday night against Sussex County. This homestand doesn't last long before the Champions head back out onto the road - only two more games against the Miners this week.
