Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

Troy, NY- The Tri-City ValleyCats split a doubleheader to the Oneonta Tigers 6-1, 1-0. The Tigers remain where they started off the day, five games behind the Stedler Division leading ValleyCats.

Ronnie Martinez pitched the first game for the ValleyCats and was absolutely outstanding. His six innings of one run ball was enough to get the Cats their 31st victory of the season. Tri-City went to work in the second inning when Kevin Vital led off with a walk. He came around to score on a Lou Santangelo single. Vital beat the throw home, which got past the catcher Joel Roa and allowed Santangelo to take second base. Edgar Babilonia who got the start in right field, smacked a double that brought Lou home and gave the ValleyCats a 2-0 lead.

The sixth inning for Tri-City yielded three more runs. Chris Clark started the inning with a single and moved to scoring position when Santangelo walked. Edgar Babilonia laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to allow both runners to move into scoring position.

Tri-City notched a run in the third inning Zobrist led off with a double and was brought In to score by Hunter Pence's RBI single. The ValleyCats had a 3-1 at that point.

The Tigers had first base open and elected to intentionally walk Drew Sutton. The bases were loaded for Jonny Ash. Tony Peralta was in at that point to pitch for Oneonta, as Tigers starter Josh Rainwater went four and a third innings. Peralta hit Jonny Ash with a pitch and the fourth run of the game was in for the ValleyCats. The ValleyCats would score two more when Zobrist unleashed a two-run single.

Martinez improved to 8-1 on the season with the win. His counterpart in game two for the ValleyCats, Andrew Alvarado, unquestionably pitched better than him but Alvarado suffered a loss. He went the distance, tossing seven innings of one-run ball on two hits.

Save for a second inning home run by Dusty Ryan, the Oneonta Tigers were absolutely dominated by the ValleyCats starter. Alvarado's trouble came with a lack of run support.

The ValleyCats left ten base runners stranded, including Ben Zobrist in the fourth inning.

He led off the frame with a triple and did not come around to score. The ValleyCats got base runners to third in innings four through seven.

The ValleyCats left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the loss the 'Cats drop to 31-21 and they are back in action tomorrow night against the same Tigers club. Game time is set for 7:00 and the game can be heard beginning at 6:40 in the Capital Region on AM 1160 WABY Mechanicville and AM 900 WUAM Saratoga Springs as well as on the Internet at sportsjuice.com.
