Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
Burlington, VT- The Vermont Expos rallied from a 6-1 deficit with three runs in the fourth and three more runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Lowell Spinners 7-6 in New York-Penn League action Tuesday night at Centennial Field.
The Expos trailed 7-4 in the seventh inning when they got an RBI single from Luke Montz. After a strikeout, David Travis lined a single to center to score Marvin Lowrance and Montz to give Vermont the 7-6 lead. It was the third 2-RBI hit in as many games for Travis, who had a two-run tie-breaking homer at Aberdeen on Monday night in the Expos 4-3 win over the Ironbirds.
Lowell had run out to a 6-1 lead with two runs in the first and four runs in the second off Expos starter Clyde Jenkins. John Otness had an RBI groundout in the first and an RBI single in the second, while Christian Lara had a two-run single in the second inning.
Vermont got its three runs in the fourth inning on a wild pitch, RBI double from Doug Vroman and an RBI single from Ofilio Castro to cut the deficit to 6-4. Vroman's double was the second extra base hit of the game after he led off the Expos first inning with his seventh home run overall and third leadoff homer of the season.
Despite the Expos offense in rallying from five runs down, they wouldn't have been able to do so without the work of the Vermont bullpen on Tuesday. Eddie Diaz relieved Jenkins in the second inning with the bases loaded and promptly gave up two hits and three runs.
But Diaz settled down to allow just one more hit over the next 3.2 innings and Thomas Wilson (1-1) followed with one-hit relief over three innings. Gus Hlebovy came on in the ninth to strikeout two and pick up his 11th save of the season. In all, the three Expos relievers combined to allow four hits in 7.2 scoreless innings with no walks and nine strikeouts.
Ditter and Vroman both had two hits for Vermont (23-26), while Lowrance was 1-for-1 with four walks to reach base safely in all five plate appearances. Matt Goodson (1-1) allowed all three runs in the Expos seventh to take the loss for Lowell (21-31).
The two teams will play the middle game of the three-game series on Wednesday with Nehomar Ochoa getting the start for the Expos on University Mall Night! The first 1,000 fans through the turnstiles will recieve a Vermont Expos seat cushion.
