Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

LOWELL, MA - The Tri-City ValleyCats fell to the red hot Lowell Spinners 9-3 on Saturday, a club who has now won nine games in a row to begin the season.

'Cats starting pitcher Carlos Sierra couldn't get out of the first inning, allowing six earned runs in two thirds of an inning before exiting the ballgame. The six runs proved to be more than enough to defeat the 'Cats, who left 11 men on base in the contest.

Tri-City jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first after a single by Daz Cameron, who then advanced to second on a throwing error by Spinners catcher Roldani Baldwin, and scored on an RBI single by Ryne Birk. A Birk steal of second, followed by two walks and a sacrifice fly by Randy Cesar, capped the scoring for the 'Cats.

The bottom half of the inning spelled disaster for Tri-City, who surrendered seven runs on four extra base hits, including a solo home run by Lowell shortstop Carlos Tovar off of Edgardo Sandoval, who came on in relief of Sierra.

The 'Cats got one run back in the second, but nothing more. Meanwhile, the Spinners scored two in the eighth off of Dylan James to give them a 9-3 lead and the ballgame.

Luis Ramirez was one of the lone bright spots for Tri-City pitchers, throwing four scoreless innings.

Ryne Birk provided most of the offense for the 'Cats, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Wrenn, Cameron, Benedetti, and Martir chipped in with one hit a piece.

The ValleyCats are now 3-6 on the year, while the Spinners remain undefeated at 9-0.

The same two teams return tomorrow night at LeLacheur Park in Lowell at 5:05 p.m. LHP Sebastian Kessay (0-0, 5.14 ERA) will be on the bump for the 'Cats, opposite LHP Darwinzon Hernandez (1-0, 0.00 ERA).
