Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

BROOKLYN, NY - After only mustering five runs while getting swept at home against Lowell, the Hudson Valley Renegades' offense finally matched their solid pitching in beating the Brooklyn Cyclones 6-4 Saturday evening at MCU Park. The win snapped the Renegades three-game losing skid. It was the fourth straight road game where Hudson Valley pounded out 10 or more hits.

After struggling to find offense against Lowell, the Renegades started fast with a three-run first inning. Rightfielder Angel Perez led off the game with a single, then moved to second on a passed ball. After a groundout moved him to third, Perez scored on an infield single to short by leftfielder Garrett Whitley to give Hudson Valley a 1-0 lead.

Back-to-back singles by third baseman Jim Haley and first baseman Nate Lowe plated Whitley to extend the lead to two. After that, a groundout by catcher Jose Rojas scored Haley from third and gave the Renegades a 3-0 advantage.

Brooklyn responded in the second with two of their own. A walk to third baseman Blake Tiberi and a single by catcher Brandon Brosher led off the inning with an ensuing wild pitch moving the runners to second and third. First baseman Darryl Knight stood in and grounded out to short to score Tiberi while Brosher moved to third on the play. The next hitter, leftfielder Hengelbert Rojas, followed with a sac fly to right to score Brosher and pull the Cyclones to within one.

The Renegades would get those runs back and then some thanks to a three-run fourth. Singles by shortstop Joseph Astacio and centerfielder Ryan Boldt, and a hit-by-pitch to Perez loaded the bases to begin the frame. However after Whitley and Haley struck out, Lowe became the second man hit by a pitch in the inning; this time forcing in a run to make it 4-2. Rojas followed that with a two-run single to center to put the Renegades up four at 6-2.

Things stayed that way until the bottom of the ninth when the Cyclones tried to mount a rally. A fielder's choice by Nick Sergakis and an RBI single by Colby Woodmansee brought Brooklyn to within 6-4 with runners at second and third with two out. However, Renegades reliever Noel Rodriguez came on and got Tiberi to ground out to second to end the game and pick up his first save of the season.

Rojas led the way for Hudson Valley while driving in three runs and Lowe added two RBI. The Renegades pounded out 10 hits; two each by Boldt and Haley. The Cyclones were led by Woodmansee who went 2-5 with two RBI.

Getting the win in relief for the Renegades was J.D. Busfield (1-0), who pitched two scoreless innings in his professional debut. He also allowed two hits and struck out a batter in the process. He came on in relief of starter Brock Burke who only went four innings, while allowing two runs on three hits and striking out three.

Cyclones starter Joel Huertas (0-1) struggled while taking the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits in four frames. He also walked four and struck out four.

Hudson Valley continues its three-game series with Brooklyn tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00. Righthander Jose Alonzo (0-0, 5.79 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Renegades against southpaw Joel Huertas (0-0, 5.06 ERA) of the Cyclones. Hudson Valley returns to Dutchess Stadium on Tuesday for the first of a three game series against Staten Island. For tickets, call 845-838-0094 or go to hvrenegades.com.
