Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT - The Vermont Lake Monsters erased an early 2-0 deficit with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and held on for their fourth win in five games with an 8-6 New York-Penn League victory over the Staten Island Yankees Saturday evening at historic Centennial Field.

The Lake Monsters loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth on back-to-back singles and a walk before a Sean Murphy walk forced home Vermont's first run. Nate Mondou tied the game one out later with a line drive single to center.

Vermont took a 3-2 lead when Steven Pallares was hit by an 0-2 pitch, then added two more runs as Murphy scored on a Luis Barrera RBI single and Mondou scored on a fielding error by rightfielder Timmy Robinson.

The Lake Monsters built the advantage to 8-2 with two runs in the fifth, including a JaVon Shelby RBI double, and a run in the sixth on a Miguel Mercedes RBI single.

The Yankees cut their deficit to two with a run in the seventh and a Nick Solak three-run double in the eighth, but Vermont reliever Daolton Sawyer pitched a scoreless ninth for his first professional save.

Mercedes was 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI for Vermont (4-5), while Branden Kelliher (1-0) allowed one run on three hits with a walk and a strikeout over 2 1/3 innings of relief to earn the victory. Kane Sweeney was 3-for-4 with an RBI triple and RBI single, while Anyelo Gomez (1-1) allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits over 3 1/2 innings to take the loss for Staten Island (7-2).

The Lake Monsters and Yankees will play the second of the three-game series at Centennial on Sunday starting at 5:05 pm with the first 500 receiving a KeyChain Flashlight courtesy of National Life Group. Fans can also play toss in the outfield post-game as part of "Have A Catch" Sunday.
