GREENVILLE, SC - In his SAL debut, Bombers' starting pitcher Henry Cabrera struck out the first five batters he faced only to have Columbus bite back for an 8-5 Greenville loss. The Bombers' newest righthander from Santiago, DR allowed four runs, four hits, three walks, while striking out an impressive seven in four complete innings.
The Bombers put up numbers early with a John Otness RBI single scoring Jeff Corsletti from second in the bottom of the first. The lead would be short-lived with doubles from Ryan Russ and Dan Batz followed by a single by Ryan Carter, plating two runs for the Catfish in the top of the second inning.
Greenville's Chuck Jeroloman scored in the third on an RBI single by John Otness which would tie the game up at two runs apiece, but Columbus put the game away for good in the top of the fourth by scoring two including a long-shot by DH Chris Westervelt. Bombers' rightfielder Chris Turner took the first pitch out of the yard in the bottom of the fourth, his sixth homer of the season, second of the series.
Columbus blew the game open in the top of the sixth inning with four runs, highlighted by a three-run round-tripper by Catfish rightfielder Sergio Pedroza. Bombers' relief pitcher Randy Newsom would shut down Columbus for the final three innings, giving Greenville a comeback opportunity. Logan Sorenson and Claudio Arias would score the home team's final two runs in the bottom of the eighth off of a double from Chris Turner, but a quiet ninth inning would leave the Bombers with a three-run deficit.
The series will conclude Tuesday night at 7:05 with probable pitchers Jarod Plummer starting for Columbus and Roger Lincoln making his third start for Greenville.
