Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Cardinals Friday announced that Swing of the Quad Cities reserve catcher Brandon Marcelli has been placed on the seven-day DL with a bone bruise on his right knee. To fill his roster spot, catcher Brady Toops was transferred from extended spring training. The Swing roster currently stands at 25 active players, the maximum allowed by the Midwest League.

Toops, 23, spent the entire 2004 season with New Jersey of the New York-Penn League. In 33 games, the University of Arkansas product hit .206 with 9 RBI. The catcher was drafted by the Cardinals in 2004 with their 10th round selection.

Marcelli, 24, was the Cardinals' 30th round selection in the same draft, but showed significant progress last season. Spending time both at Peoria and Advanced-A Palm Beach, he hit a combined .255 with 12 RBI in 36 games. The California native, who was drafted out of Fresno State University, will remain with the team on the Disabled List.

NEXT HOME GAME: After a season-opening seven-game road trip, the Swing will open the home portion of their schedule on Friday, April 15, against the Clinton LumberKings. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30.
