West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
BATTLE CREEK- Josh Kauten faced the minimum fifteen batters over five innings pitched as the Devil Rays managed only two hits in an 8-1 Whitecaps victory.
Kauten walked only one batter, Reid Brignac with one out in the first, but Brignac was caught stealing.
Jeff Frazier bashed a two-run homer to cap a three-run fifth that gave West Michigan its needed margin of victory. Brooks Colvin led off the fifth with a triple to centerfield and went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Wilkin Ramirez broke through with a pair of doubles over the last two innings, including a two-run hit in the ninth.
The Devil Rays only run of the night came in the seventh, when Southwest Michigan did not record a hit. Brignac crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Jay Sborz allowed the run and pitched two innings of relief. Anthony Tomey and Collin Mahoney each tossed scoreless inning out of the Whitecap bullpen.
Jarred Lavergne, who kept the 'Caps off the scoreboard until the fifth was saddled with the loss.
The Real Opener: West Michigan's home opener is Saturday at Fifth Third Ballpark. RHP Andrew Kown is expected to start for the Whitecaps against Devil Rays LHP Jino Gonzalez. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m. A special Eikenhout Incorporated Pre Game Show will begin at 6:00 p.m. on the entire Whitecaps Radio Network.
A three run homer from Josh Lee, followed by three consecutive walks brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth inning for the Whitecaps during a 10-6 loss to Southwest Michigan. West Michigan grabbed a 2-0 lead thanks to a ground ball hit by Lee that was botched by Devil Rays second baseman Josh Asanovich. Brian Dlugach and Luis Sabino each scored on the play. The D-Rays scored twice in both the fourth and fifth to tie the game, then take the lead. A single by Jody Roughton pulled the Caps to within one at 4-3 in the sixth, but Southwest Michigan put the game away with seven run in the eighth, when they sent eleven batters to the plate.
On two occasions reliever Nick Moran was a strike away from earning a three-inning save, but gave up Lee's homer and was removed from the game. Calvin Carpenter then walked the bases loaded and did not throw a strike over ten pitches to leave the door open for West Michigan. Wilkin Ramirez grounded to short to end the game. Lee finished 2-for-4 as did Brent Dlugach.
