
Kernels blast Cougars 11-0

The Cedar Rapids Kernels used a trio of three-run home runs to blast the Kane County Cougars 11-0 Friday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids.
The Kernels began the offensive attack in the bottom of the third. After Cougars starter Michael Rogers got the first two outs, Richard Giannotti singled, Josh LeBlanc walked, and Freddy Sandoval followed with a three-run homer to give the Kernels a 3-0 advantage. The ensuing batter, Sean Rodriguez, also launched a long ball and Cedar Rapids went up 4-0. The rival from Iowa went deep again in the fifth when Aaron Peel roped a three-run blast to make it 7-0. After a single run in the sixth, Warner Madrigal cracked a three-run shot to complete the offense for an 11-0 total.
Tommy Everidge had three hits for the Cougars, while Kory Wayment and Chalon Tietje both singled. Rogers (0-1) took the loss and Cedar Rapids' starter Nic Touchstone (1-0) got the win. The Cougars (1-1) look to rebound tomorrow at 5 p.m. in game three of the series with the Kernels (1-1). Lefty Derek Tharpe gets the nod for Kane County, and he will face right-hander Rafael Rodriguez.
