Castro Bats Vipers to Seventh Straight Victory

The Calgary Vipers got a monster game from Nelson Castro in defeating the Orange County Flyers 9-7 at Goodwin Field in Fullerton, California. Castro went five-for-five with a home run, double, two runs scored, and five runs batted in for a league high 49 RBI this season. With the victory the Snakes have won seven straight games and start the second half with a 1-0 record in the Golden Baseball League's North Division.

Hideki Nagasaka pitched an outstanding game throwing seven innings and allowing only one run. In his first professional appearance Brian Oliver threw a scoreless inning without giving up a hit.

Calgary took the lead in the top of the first inning as Fehlandt Lentini singled and scored on a Nelson Castro run batted in double. Castro advanced to third base on the throw to the plate and scored on a passed ball for a 2-0 advantage.

Orange County cut the lead in half to 2-1 in the bottom of the third as Steve Boggs singled, stole second base, and scored on a two-out base hit from Jimmy Rohan.

The Vipers scored two more runs for a 4-1 lead in the fifth as Lentini singled and Castro smoked his seventh home run of the season.

A third two-run inning was produced by the Snakes in the visitor's half of the sixth as Miller singled, stole second base(!), Dillon O'Krane doubled in a run, Buddy Morales singled, and Ivan Reyes hit a sacrifice fly for a 6-1 advantage.

In the top of the eighth three more runs were scored for a 9-1 lead when Miller, Morales, Reyes, and Lentini all walked for a run and Castro drove in two more with a base hit.

The Flyers mounted a big rally in the bottom of the ninth for six runs all with two outs and a 9-7 final score.

The Vipers now returns home to Foothills Stadium on Friday July 10th at 7:05 PM MDT when they host the Yuma Scorpions for a three-game series including games on Saturday July 11th at 5:05 PM MDT and Sunday July 12th at 1:35 PM MDT. On Friday it will be Mexican Night at the ballpark, on Saturday is Movie Night as Sandlot will be shown on the big screen after the game, and on Sunday it is Bark at the Park and Little League Day where fans can bring their dog to the game and all Little Leaguers get in for free at the Stadium.

The pitching rotation for the three-game-set will be Evan Greusel (5-1), Erik Dessau (4-1), and Joe Sergent (3-3). In his last start Greusel picked up a victory going six innings and allowing two runs while striking out five. Dessau is also coming off a victory and his was a complete seven inning game allowing only one earned run while not walking a batter. Sergent on the other hand is coming off his fourth no-decision of the season after allowing two earned runs in six innings while striking out four his last time out. The left-hander is fifth in the league in both strikeouts (47) and earned run average (3.21).
