Victoria Seals News Release

Victoria, BC - After splitting the double header to open their mid-week series against the Yuma Scorpions, the Victoria Seals returned for a game three rubber match on Thursday afternoon. With the Scorpions sending Carlos Ladeuth (2-2) to the hill, the Seals responded with newly-signed James Garcia (0-0) in the series finale at Royal Athletic Park.

Grabbing an early lead in game three, a solo home run from Carlos Arroyo gave the Scorpions a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning. Victoria would respond with some power hitting of their own in the bottom of the second, when Josh Arhart and Terry Mermer both picked up home runs to lift the Seals to a 2-1 lead through two frames.

Answering back in the top of the third, Yuma got back-to-back two-out doubles from Adolfo Gomez and Arroyo to even the contest, and send the game deadlocked to the fifth inning. In the top half of the fifth, the Scorpions would stake their second lead of the ballgame after the lead-off batter, Jonathon Lozada, was hit by a pitch, and later scored on the third RBI of the contest from Arroyo for a 3-2 score.

The visitors would stretch their lead to three runs in the seventh frame, using three consecutive singles from Ismael Castro, Diover Avila and Carlos Balcazar off of Seals reliever Ezequiel Ruvalcaba to post a 5-2 advantage. Adding one more in the seventh, following a lead-off single from Deivis Rivadeneira, Yuma took a 6-2 lead into the eighth frame at Royal Athletic Park.

After Bret LeVier launched Victoria's third home run of the game over the left field fence to cut the deficit to three, the Scorpions answered with a solo home run of their own from Carlos Villalobos in the top of the ninth to cement a 7-3 lead. With Christian Mendoza on to retire the side again in the bottom of the frame, the Seals drop their second straight to the Scorpions, a 7-3 final in game three.

Carlos Ladeuth was outstanding en route to the win for Yuma, allowing just five Victoria hits while racking up 15 consecutive outs in the middle portion of the contest. James Garcia takes the loss in his debut with the Seals, as Carlos Arroyo led the offense for the Scorpions, picking up 3 RBI's while finishing 3-for-5 at the plate.
