Outlaws Rally Doubled Up In Loss
July 9, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Chico Outlaws News Release
In an error riddled ballgame, the Outlaws fall behind after scoring in the top of the first, and late-inning rallies were wiped out by double-plays in both the 8th and 9th innings.
For the second night in a row, the Chico Outlaws scored in their first at-bat to take an early lead at Blair Field in Long Beach, California. But, two fielding errors in the bottom of the first allowed to men to reach who would come around to score, and the Armada were on their way to the victory.
3-1 after the first inning, the Outlaws would battle back and score three runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the score at 7. The three runs were aided by a throwing error by Armada starter Scott Lonergan, continuing the theme of the night.
However, the Armada would strike for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to reclaim the lead, and they would never look back.
The Outlaws made it interesting in the late innings. They put two men on with just one out in the 8th inning, but Garry Templeton brought in sidewinding right-hander Jason Segal, and on his second pitch, Segal induced an inning-ending double-play.
Then, in the ninth, after a leadoff ground out, the Outlaws were patient at the plate and took three consecutive walks to load the bases. That chased primary Long Beach closer Ryne Tacker from the game, and brought in veteran reliever Sean Buller. The southpaw Buller would induce another groundball double-play to end the game with the go-ahead run onboard at first base.
Scott Lonergan worked five innings, and after his team broke the tie in the 5th inning ,he would earn the victory. Michael Martin got the tough luck loss, as the errors and unearned runs piled up early. Both teams committed five errors on the evening.
On the brightside, Dale Swinford did go 2-for-2 with three walks on the night to reach base all five times he came to the plate. Truan Mehl finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBI's, both of them collected on singles.
The series will now go to a decisive game on Thursday night, with the first pitch flying at 7:05 p.m. Former major-leaguer Wayne Franklin will make his second start as an Outlaw as the team looks to finish the first half of their season on a positive note and finish above .500.
