Castellani, Freedom Blank Otters in Series Finale

August 25, 2019 - Frontier League (FL) - Evansville Otters News Release

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Evansville Otters ran into a tough matchup Sunday against the Florence Freedom's Mike Castellani on the mound, who led the Freedom to a 4-0 win over the Otters.

Sunday's series finale was a pitcher's duel early in the game. Both starting pitchers, Castellani for Florence and Tyler Beardsley for Evansville, were throwing up zeroes on the scoreboard.

With both offenses being held in check early on, there were a combined four hits through four innings. Evansville didn't get their first hit off Castellani until the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Freedom broke the scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the fifth.

With two outs, Florence loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. Then Isaac Benard knocked in the two runs with a single to score Ricky Ramirez Jr. and Caleb Lopes.

Florence tacked on another run in the top of the sixth to take a 3-0 lead on a solo home run by Connor Crane. For Crane, it was his 11th home run of the season but his 13th RBI against the Otters this season.

Beardsley went six innings in Sunday's start, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out three in the loss. Beardsley's record moved to 8-4 on the season.

Sunday was the first time this season in 10 starts at home that Beardsley surrendered more than two runs, and it was his first loss at Bosse Field this season.

The Freedom increased their lead to 4-0 in the top of the eighth on an RBI hit by Austin Wobrock.

Castellani was solid for Florence in the rubber game, going 8.1 shutout innings, giving up three hits, and striking out four. With the win, Castellani improved his record to 9-2.

Florence reliever Karl Craigie recorded the final two outs for the Freedom.

Otters reliever Cam Opp pitched two innings, giving up one run with two strikeouts, and Taylor Wright pitched a scoreless top of the ninth with a pair of strikeouts.

Keith Grieshaber recorded two of the Otters' four hits on Sunday.
