Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

FREDERICKSBURG, VA. - The Delmarva Shorebirds erased an early 4-0 deficit to take a lead only to see the Fredericksburg Nationals have the last laugh in a 11-9 loss on Thursday night at Virginia Credit Union Stadium.

The Shorebirds (44-78, 23-34) fell behind early to the Nationals (69-53, 36-20) who started the scoring with a crooked number in the second inning.

In that second, the FredNats put runners at first and second with one away when Jared McKenzie singled home a run, with the throw to the plate allowing McKenzie to go to second while Branden Boissiere took third. Cortland Lawson then singled both home. After a strikeout and a Lawson steal of second, Jacob Young singled in Lawson to make it 4-0.

The Shorebirds responded immediately in the top of the third. Adam Retzbach walked and Noelberth Romero walked to start the frame. Carter Young then doubled in Retzbach with Romero going to third. Back-to-back groundouts to second from Jackson Holliday and Dylan Beavers plated runs to bring the 'Birds to within one.

In the last of the fourth, Will Frizzell knocked in two for the FredNats to reopen their lead out to 6-3.

The Shorebirds rallied all the way back in the fifth. Romero singled with one away and Young then walked. Holliday then grounded a single to center to score Romero. Beavers followed with a ringing double, scoring Young. After a strikeout, a walk to Reed Trimble loaded the bases. Elio Prado then drew another walk, forcing in the tying run. Maxwell Costes then gave the 'Birds the lead with a two-run single to center, making it 8-6.

The Nationals immediately tied the game in the last of the fifth. With two outs and a runner at first, Maxwell Romero doubled to rightfield to plate a run. Young then singled again to score Romero and tie the game at 8-8.

A two-run homer for Cortland Lawson, his second of the year, gave the Nationals the lead back, 10-8.

An insurance run came in for the FredNats in the last of the eighth on an RBI single for Branden Boissiere, scoring Trey Lipscomb who had singled and stolen second to start the inning.

Young began the Shorebirds ninth with a bang, blasting his first Shorebirds homer, a solo shot, to make it 11-9. Despite bringing the tying run to the plate later in the inning, the 'Birds couldn't mount one final rally.

Brendan Collins (4-2) collected the win for the Nationals with 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out four.

Ryan Long (7-5) suffered the loss for Delmarva, snapping his five-game winning streak while also seeing his scoreless innings streak conclude at 21 innings. Long went 3.2 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks without recording a strikeout.

The Shorebirds continue their series with the Nationals on Friday, September 2 at Virginia Credit Union Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. and theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
