Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS - Ryan Held's deflection past Ken Carroll at 5:20 of the third period proved to be the game-winning goal as Mississippi knocked off Bossier-Shreveport 3-2 on Tuesday night at the DeSoto Civic Center. The loss was only the Mudbugs' tenth of the year, and finally put the 'Bugs in double-digits in the loss column with just 11 games left in the season.
Despite the loss, Ken Carroll played one of his best games of the year in goal, stopping numerous breakaways and rebound shots. Bossier-Shreveport rallied from a 2-1 deficit late in the second period on Kevin Cooper's goal that earned Daniel Pegoraro his second assist of the night.
Mississippi came out strong with quite a few scoring chances early on in the game, but Ken Carroll made all the saves to keep the 'Kings off the scoreboard. The Mudbugs found their legs as the period went along and took the lead before it was over. With Darrell Stoddard in the penalty box for the second time in the period, Joe Ori and Pegoraro worked the puck into the offensive zone before Pegoraro got it out front for Matt York, who put home his third goal of the season with just five seconds remaining in the first period. That gave Bossier-Shreveport a 1-0 lead after twenty minutes.
In the second period, the RiverKings tied the game on Aaron Davis' 5-on-3 powerplay goal at 3:57. Mississippi then took the lead, finally getting a puck past Carroll after a spectacular goaltending display. During the sequence, Carroll stopped one shot and another before somehow getting a pad on a shot that was headed just inside the post while he was sprawled out on the ice. Shortly after, Carroll stopped a clear-cut breakaway by Mississippi 's Ryan Held before getting beaten between the legs on Derek Landmesser's point shot that hit traffic in front of the net. The goal made it 2-1 for the RiverKings midway through the period. Later though, Bossier-Shreveport tied the game once again, as Pegoraro made another nice play to set up Cooper on the backdoor. Cooper roofed Pegoraro's pass by Ian Keserich for his 22nd goal of the year and a 2-2 tied after two.
The Mudbugs started out strong in the third period, but it was the 'Kings who would notch the go-ahead goal. Held deflected Cody Blanshan's point shot between the arm and body of Carroll to give Mississippi the one-goal advantage six minutes into the final frame. Despite putting 12 shots on Keserich in the third, the 'Bugs wouldn't score again and fell 3-2 to even the season series at five apiece between the Northeast Division rivals.
Despite a 12-4 third period shot advantage, Bossier-Shreveport was outshot 29-28 for the game. Carroll stopped 26 shots in the loss, while Keserich made the same number of saves to earn the win. Both teams finished the night converting one of three powerplay chances. The win, paired with Youngstown's loss to Texas put the RiverKings ahead of the SteelHounds in the standings, although the teams both have 62 points. The Brahmas aren't far behind with 61 points.
Bossier-Shreveport will now head home for their second of three meetings with the Rocky Mountain Rage on Thursday before traveling to battle the Texas Brahmas on Saturday night. Thursday at CenturyTel Center , the Rage will be fighting to stay on top of the Northwest Division over the surging Colorado Eagles and the 'Bugs will try to get some payback on Rocky Mountain for a 5-4 shootout loss back in early December. Tickets for the 7:05 pm game are available through Ticketmaster (318-741-9700) for individual tickets or the Mudbugs office (318-752-BUGS) for group seats.
