Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Brett Carroll mashed two home runs and drove in five, but a huge early deficit was too much for Albuquerque to overcome Sunday afternoon, as the Isotopes (18-19) dropped a 19-9 decision to Tacoma (17-21) at Isotopes Park.
Carroll's first homer, a three-run blast, came in the fourth inning and accounted for the first three runs of the game for Albuquerque. Prior to that, though, the Rainiers put up 16 runs-including nine in the first inning-to take a commanding lead that was never seriously threatened.
Tacoma forced an early exit for Isotopes starter Ricardo Rodriguez (1-3). The right-hander took the loss Sunday, exiting after just 0.1 innings. He allowed six earned runs on five hits, recording his lone out on a sacrifice bunt. Nic Ungs entered in relief and struggled as well, surrendering 10 runs-eight earned-on nine hits over 3.2 frames. Chris Young and Matt Yourkin each tossed two scoreless innings before the Rainiers managed to tap Ross Wolf for three insurance runs in the ninth.
Rainiers starter Jorge Campillo allowed nine runs on nine hits with five walks and five strikeouts over 4.2 innings. The win went to Jason Mackintosh (1-0), who didn't allow a run over the final 4.1 innings.
Tacoma sent 12 men to the plate in the first inning, posting nine runs on eight hits. After a quiet second, the Rainiers put up two runs in the third and added five more in the fourth to take a 16-0 advantage.
The âTopes fought back in the home half of the fourth inning. Carrol's homer to left knocked in three, and was followed by run-scoring singles for Jeremy Hermida and Todd Sears. The âTopes took another chunk out of the deficit an inning later, plating four runs in the fifth. It was Carroll again, this time with a two-run shot to left-center to make the score 16-7. Eric Reed followed with an RBI double, and Sears drove in another with a single to right.
The offense would end there, though, for Albuquerque as Tacoma reliever Mackintosh shut the âTopes down over the final 4.1 frames.
Carroll finished 3-for-5 with five RBI and two runs driven in. Johnny Raburn had a 4-for-5 afternoon with two runs scored. Reed and Sears each collected two hits in a 13-hit effort for the Isotopes.
Tacoma recorded 21 hits on the day, with five batters finishing with three hits apiece. Each member of the starting nine collected at least one hit for Tacoma.
Adam Jones hit two homers and finished with three hits, five RBI and three runs scored. Mike Morse collected three hits and drove in four.
The series continues Monday night at The Lab. Kenny Baugh (0-0, 9.00) makes his first start with the Isotopes, facing off with righty Justin Lehr (4-0, 2.55). First pitch is set for 6:35 PM.
