TODAY: The Royals host Fresno at 1:35 p.m. in game 2 of a 4-game series. Omaha is 0-1 in the series and 2-3 on the homestand. LAST NIGHT: Fresno scored 4 runs in the 1st inning and the Grizzlies never relinquished the lead, taking the series opener 7-5. The big 1st inning came off emergency starter Jason Shiell, after Brian Bannister was a late scratch. The Grizzlies collected 4 straight singles off Shiell (0-1) to begin the game and were aided by right fielder Jorge Padilla's error, scoring 2 unearned runs in the frame. Fresno starter Travis Blackley (3-1) won his 3rd consecutive decision, giving up 3 runs on 9 hits over 7.0 stanzas, and stopped the Grizzlies' 4-game losing skid. Clay Timpner and former Royal Chad Santos hit solo homers in the 7th and 8th innings, respectively, for insurance.
ROYALS REPORT: Omaha's opponent has scored in the 1st inning in 8 of the past 9 home games, tallying 18 runs. The Royals are 3-5 in those contests. *** Shiell stepped in for Bannister after KC decided to place Luke Hudson back on the disabled list due to his ailing right shoulder after he made just 1 start for the parent club. Bannister is expected to be recalled by KC. *** Meanwhile, Scott Elarton - who, like Hudson, rehabbed with Omaha recently - was activated from the DL and made his 1st start for KC last night. Elarton, rebounding from shoulder surgery, was solid. He gave up 2 earned runs on 6 hits in 5.0 innings and was in line for a win, but the White Sox rallied against the KC bullpen for a 5-4 victory in 10 innings. To make roster space for Elarton, lefty reliever Neal Musser was optioned back to Omaha. *** Right-hander Danny Tamayo joins Omaha today from KC's extended spring training. Tamayo is rebounding from surgery on his right shoulder, which caused him to miss most of last season. He pitched in just 7 games (3 starts) for Omaha in 2006, going 3-2 with a 4.21 ERA. *** Omaha had closed to within a run of Fresno, trailing 4-3, after 4 innings last night. But, some base running mistakes hurt the Royals comeback attempt. Joey Gathright was caught in a rundown trying to steal 3rd base for the final out of the 5th, Mike Aviles was out trying to score from 3rd on a pitch that trickled behind Fresno catcher Barry Gunther in the 6th and Andres Blanco was tagged out by shortstop Ivan Ochoa after rounding 2nd base too far on Gathright's infield single, ending the 7th. The Royals also grounded into 3 double plays, including one by Angel Berroa after 4 consecutive Royals reached base facing Brian Wilson to begin the 9th. *** Berroa was 0-for-5 last night, snapping a 6-game hitting streak. *** Blanco had a season-best 3 hits Saturday night. *** Gathright collected 2 bunt singles and an infield hit last night, running his hit string to 8 games. He's batting .485 (16-33) during the streak, with 4 RBI and 6 runs scored. *** Mitch Maier delivered his 5th double and 2nd triple of the season last night. *** Roberto Giron gave up 2 gopher balls last night - he has surrendered 5 homers in 24.1 innings this season.
STARTERS: RH Brian Bowles (0-2, 4.79) vs. RH Zach Day (1-0, 3.18)
Day makes his 7th start and 8th appearance of the season. He has been working on a pitch limit as he rebounds from shoulder surgery. The 28-year old right-hander's last outing was last Tuesday vs. Sacramento; he was not involved in the decision as the Royals won 7-6 in 13 innings (3.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 6 BB, 2 K). The 6 walks allowed in that outing upped his walk total to 19 over 22.2 innings pitched this season, although he has only surrendered 11 hits. Day was signed by KC as a minor league free agent last December, after spending most of the past 5 seasons pitching in the Major Leagues with Montreal, Washington and Colorado. In 2006, Day opened the season with the Rockies, going 1-2 with a 10.80 ERA in 3 starts before being released on April 21. He was claimed by Washington on April 26 and made 5 starts for the Nationals, going 1-3 with a 4.73 ERA. Day was shut down following his May 22 start and underwent season-ending surgery to repair a partial tear in his right rotator cuff on June 6. Day has compiled a 21-27 career Major League record with a 4.66 ERA, while going 54-46 with a 3.64 ERA in his minor league career prior to this season. He was originally selected by the New York Yankees in the 5th round of the 1996 draft out of LaSalle High in Cincinnati.
