Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Tucson, AZ - Sidewinders RF Alex Romero and DH Mark Johnson each had three hits for the Sidewinders, and RHP Yusmeiro Petit was perfect through six innings in Tucson's 9-7 victory on Sunday night.
Tucson batted around in the third and had four straight singles to start the inning, including CF Jeff Salazar's two RBI single to bring in Romero and 2B Danny Richar. Following a ground out, C Jamie D'Antona hit his team leading 11th double to score Salazar from second. The Sidewinders would add three more in the inning to increase their lead to 6-0 heading into the fourth.
The Sidewinders added three more in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from 1B Chris Carter, and a bases-loaded double from Johnson.
Throughout all of the offensive slugging, Petit was having an incredible day on the mound. Petit had a perfect game heading into the seventh inning, but gave up a leadoff double to RedHawks 3B Desi Relaford to erase both the perfect game and the no-hitter.
After the double, Petit walked 2B Tug Hulett, and hit DH Marlon Byrd in the back to load the bases. LF Jason Botts then hit a ground ball to first base, but Carter misplayed it allowing the bases to remain loaded and a run to score. Following the error, CF Kevin Mahar singled to left, scoring Hulett.
RHP Jailen Peguero replaced Petit with no outs and the bases loaded, and immediately gave up a 2-0 grand slam to RF Kevin West. The homer was West's second long ball of the season, and put the RedHawks within striking distance 9-6. Another Oklahoma run gave the RedHawks seven in the inning, and just a two run deficit.
Fortunately for the Sidewinders, Oklahoma was unable to put any hits together in the eighth and ninth innings, and RHP Chad Harville shut the door for the Sidewinders in the ninth, striking out two of the four batters he faced. The save was Harville's ninth of the season. With the win the Sidewinders improved to 17-19, and the RedHawks dropped to 19-17.
The Sidewinders will face the RedHawks for the third game of the series tomorrow night. First pitch is at 6:30 PM. RHP Enrique Gonzalez (1-3, 4.74) is scheduled to start for Tucson. Right-hander Ezequiel Astacio (0-1, 1.42) will start for Oklahoma. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:15 p.m.
