Carolina Closes Year with Loss

ZEBULON, NC - One the final day of the regular season, the Tennessee Smokies defeated the Carolina Mudcats 3-2 at Five County Stadium.

Tennessee (44-26) scored a pair of runs off Travis Webb (L 6-10) as Brett Jackson and Brandon Guyer both doubled to begin the inning, Guyer's double brought home Jackson while the final run of the inning scored on a Steve Clevenger single and the Smokies took a 2-0 after three. That lead grew to 3-0 when Guyer collected his second RBI of the game when he homered to left leading off the fifth.

Carolina (28-40) scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Shane Carlson led off the inning with a solo home run, the first of his Double A career and cut the lead to two runs. The Mudcats scored their final run of the season in the last of the seventh when Chris McMurray singled to begin the frame, that was followed by a Cody Puckett pinch-hit double to put two on with no outs. After the run came home on a Miguel Rojas groundout which cut the lead to 3-2.

The Mudcats put the tying run on second base in the bottom of the ninth when Carlson doubled down the right field line. However, when Carolina tried to bunt the runner to third, the Smokies closer, Esmailin Caridad (S 1) fired to third in time to get the lead runner. With two outs and a runner at first the last hope for the season was Felix Perez

Carolina ends the year with an overall record of 58-79 and finished fifth in the North division.
