Carl Stands out in Debut, But Winning Streak Ends

Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Despite a terrific start from newcomer Edwin Carl, the Winnipeg Goldeyes simply couldn't do anything with the Kansas City T-Bones pitching staff.
Then they threw it away.
Sunday afternoon, Kansas City starter Bobby Doran and relievers Aaron Baker and Fernando Hernandez shut down the Goldeyes on only four hits as the T-Bones beat Winnipeg 2-1 in a thriller at Shaw Park.
It was a heartbreaking loss for the Fish. A wild pitch by Jailen Peguero allowed Kansas Citys' Jacob Hayes to score the eventual winning run from third base in the top of the ninth. To that point it had been a beautifully pitched game by both teams.
With the loss, the Fish fell to 30-35 on the season and had their seven-game winning streak stopped in its tracks. Kansas City is now 35-27, six games ahead of the Fish in the American Association Wild Card race.
Goldeyes starter Edwin Carl was sparkling. He allowed only one run, on a seventh-inning homer to Adam Bailey and struck out 10. In fact, he struck out nine batters in the first four innings. It was a solid performance from a guy who is still essentially rehabbing after missing nearly 18 months of baseball.
"It was auto-immune disease," he said. "It affected my knees, ankles and feet. They all swelled up and I was in a wheelchair. But after a very long time it improved, thanks to my meds. I still had to get in shape and put on 50 pounds. I was really sick.
"Felt great today. I just wanted to come out and throw strikes. I was able to do that. The fastball was my out-pitch today and I had good command."
The Goldeyes opened the scoring in the sixth when Adam Heisler singled and stole second. Two batters later, he came home to score on a single by Casey Haerther.
Kansas City tied it in the top of the seventh when Adam Bailey homered off Carl. They won it on a wild pitch in the ninth.
Kansas City finished with two runs on eight scattered hits while the Goldeyes managed only one run on four hits. Haerther led the way with an RBI single and a walk.
Baker (2-0, 1.57 ERA) got credit for the win, while Peguero (2-2, 3.72 ERA) was tagged with the loss. Hernandez picked up his 13 th save for Kansas City.
The Goldeyes and T-Bones will play the final game of this three-game series on Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at Shaw Park. American Association pitcher of the month Nick Hernandez (8-3, 1.87 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg, while Kris Regas (6-3, 5.03 ERA) will toe the rubber for Kansas City.
Tickets for all Goldeyes home games in 2015 are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
