Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Joplin, MO - The Gary South Shore RailCats have made enough roster changes to keep even the best fan on their toes this season. Powered by another roster change, three homeruns and Charle Rosario the RailCats beat the Joplin Blasters 10-1 to open a four game series Saturday night at Joe Becker Stadium.
With the mercury around 90 degrees the RailCats heated up in the second off of Blasters ace Nestor Molina. Jose Sermo led off the inning with a single. Adam Taylor also singled to right to put runners at first and second and an introduction was in order.
When the team arrived in Missouri the RailCats welcomed another new face to the roster in Alex Hernandez. Hernandez was signed and activated prior to the game made a great first impression in the second inning. The former Houston Astros farm hand hit a deep drive to left field in his first at bat as a RailCat to make it 3-0 scoring his new teammates Sermo and Taylor.
The Blasters looked like they might get on the board in the next half inning with runners at first and second and no outs but Gabe Suarez was doubled up on a bunt attempt to kill the rally. The bunt rolled in front of the plate and Michael Vaughn picked it up and threw to third then Roger Bernal threw to first to get the first two outs. Charle Rosario then struck out the next batter Juan Medina part of his season high six strike outs.
That double play carried the RailCats into the next inning. Drew Martinez was hit by a pitch from Molina in the thigh to start the inning for Gary. Jon Jones followed with a double to put runners at second and third. Michael Vaughn then reached on an error by second baseman Maikol Gonzalez but was credited with an RBI to make it 4-0. Jose Sermo then hit a hard smash to first that brought home another run to make it 5-0. Roger Bernal added a single and it was 6-0.
Rosario was now in a groove and retired six of the next seven in the fourth and fifth. In the sixth he worked around a leadoff single and finished a 1-2-3 seventh before he left the game. It was his team leading seventh quality start for the South Shore and the righty would notch his 10th win in the end.
In the sixth the RailCats got a bases loaded walk from Roger Bernal that chased Molina from the game and made it 7-0. The RailCats would have another big inning in the top of the seventh, when JD Pulfer hit his second homer of the season to make it a 8-0 game off of Blasters reliever Jake Meiers. Drew Martinez then followed with a singled right and Jon Jones hit a line shot homerun to left and the RailCats were up 10-0.
It was the first time this year the RailCats had hit two homeruns in an inning and it was a season high in homeruns in a game. The team came in with only seven on the season now has 10. For Jones it was his third to go along with a 3 for 4 night scoring three and driving in a pair.
Matt Solter worked two innings for the RailCats allowing one run on three hits. Charle Rosario (10-5) joins former RailCat and current St. Paul Saint Dustin Crenshaw (11) with at least 10 wins this season in the American Association. Molina (6-4) was charged with the loss giving up seven runs six earned in 4.1.
The series will continue Sunday with a 5:05 pm start from Joplin with LHP Rene Solis (1-6, 4.51) for the RailCats set to face RHP Carlos Fuentes (1-1, 3.17) for Joplin. The game can be heard on WEFM and online at RailCatsBaseball.com.
