Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Springfield Cardinals cashed in on an eighth-inning error, defeating the Arkansas Travelers by a score of 6-5 on Monday night at Hammons Field. The win is Springfield's fifth straight, giving them a three-game sweep of the Travs and keeping them in a first-place tie with Northwest Arkansas.
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth against Travs' reliever Francisco Rodriguez (5-5), Andrew Brown walked, then moved to third on Brandon Buckman's single. With runners at the corners and two away, pinch-hitter Brandon Yarbrough hit a hard grounder off the glove of Travs' second baseman Nate Sutton. By the time Sutton recovered, Yarbrough had beaten the throw to first, as Brown scored to give the Cards a 6-5 lead.
Luke Gregerson, who worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning, retired the side in order in the ninth. Gregerson (7-6) struck out four of the six hitters he faced, including Ryan Leahy to end it.
Brown gave the Cards the lead in the first inning at 3-0, blasting a long three-run homer to left field off Travs' starter Daniel Davidson, his 12th in a Springfield uniform.
Brett Wallace's two-run double in the third put Springfield up 5-0.
The Travs began to mount their comeback in the fourth, as Corey Smith belted a two-run homer off of Cards' starter Adam Ottavino, making it 5-2.
Arkansas got two more in the fifth, as Mark Trumbo's two-out single plated two to make it 5-4.
Ottavino was chased in the sixth with two outs, after back-to-back singles. Jonathan Mikrut worked out of trouble in the sixth, but gave up a game-tying homer to Brian Stavisky in the seventh, making it 5-5.
The Cards (37-26) look for their sixth straight win on Tuesday, hosting the Tulsa Drillers in the opening game of a four-game series, the final regular-season series at Hammons Field. Kyle Mura (3-3) will throw for Springfield, while Tulsa will counter with Brandon Hynick (9-7). Game time on Tuesday is 7:10pm and gates open at 6:10pm. Tuesday is Baseball Card Set Giveaway, sponsored by the Chevy Dealers of the Ozarks, as 3,000 fans will receive a 2008 Team Set of Springfield Cardinals Baseball Cards. 2,000 fans will also be treated to a free frozen chocolate banana thanks to Diana's Bananas on their way out of Hammons Field on Tuesday night.
