Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals wrapped up their 2009 regular season road schedule on Monday night, defeating the Arkansas Travelers by a score of 2-1 at Dickey-Stephens Park.

Scott Gorgen turned in a quality start, while Marco Gonzalez and Casey Mulligan stepped up to combine for three scoreless innings of relief out of the Springfield bullpen.

Gorgen (4-4), who allowed just one run over six innings, allowed three hits and three walks, striking out five batters.

Arkansas starter Tim Kiely (4-3) pitched well too, giving up just a pair of runs over 6 2/3 innings.

After a number of long fly-ball outs off Springfield bats in the first few innings, Tony Cruz put one over the left-field fence, his tenth homer of the year to put the Redbirds on the board at 1-0.

Later in the sixth, with Colt Sedbrook at third base and two outs, Kiely uncorked a wild pitch, as Sedbrook scored to make it 2-0.

The Travs got to Gorgen for their only run of the game in the sixth. Coby Smith doubled to open the inning, then moved to third on an out to center field. Nate Sutton's infield single plated Smith, cutting Springfield's advantage to 2-1. After Gorgen walked Mark Trumbo with one out, Hank Conger grounded into an inning-ending double-play, keeping the Cards in front.

Gonzalez, who pitched a scoreless inning yesterday, fired two scoreless frames on Monday.

Mulligan came out of the pen in the ninth and gave up a quick single to Ryan Mount. After a sac bunt moved Mount into scoring position, Mulligan came right back to fan both Jay Caligiuri and Ivan Contreras, ending the game and giving Mulligan his first career save at the Double-A level.

The Cards (29-34, 67-66) return to Hammons Field on Tuesday night, opening up their final home stand of the regular season. Ryan Kulik (6-9) takes on Tulsa's Keith Weiser (8-14) in the opening game of the seven-game home stand.
