Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
Will Inman tossed seven solid innings and struck out six Monday night as San Antonio staved off a Corpus Christi sweep with a 7-2 victory over the Hooks at Wolff Municipal Stadium.
Corpus Christi (28-35, 59-74) stands 12-13 against the Missions, finishing the year with a 7-7 record in the AlamoCity.
San Antonio (27-36, 66-67) struck for two runs in the second. Lance Zawadzki stroked a one-out single and Seth Johnston belted a 3-2 offering from Hooks starter Sergio Perez over the right-field fence for his ninth home run of the season.
The Missions pushed their advantage to 4-0 in the next frame on a pair of RBI singles by Logan Forsythe and Craig Cooper. A bases-loaded double play turned by Wladimir Sutil, Felix Molina and Mark Ori ended the threat.
Jason Castro started the scoring for Corpus Christi with a two-out single in the fourth. Jimmy Van Ostrand then cracked his 18th double into center field, cutting the Missions' lead to three.
Castro and Van Ostrand both travel to Cary, North Carolina, on Tuesday to join Team USA and Team Canada, respectively, for the upcoming IBAF Baseball World Cup.
Perez (10-11) was chased from the game in the home half of the fourth. Mitch Canham, who opened the frame with a single, advanced to second on Inman's sacrifice bunt. Eric Sogard made it 5-1 on a double to right field. Perez bounced back with a strikeout but back-to-back singles by Forsythe and Cooper put San Antonio up by six.
The Tampa native was charged with seven runs on 10 hits over four innings. He walked three and fanned five. Perez had allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his last seven starts.
Molina hit a lead-off triple in the fifth and came around to score Corpus Christi's second run on Nick Moresi's sacrifice fly to center field.
Inman (6-4), who yielded just four hits and one walk, retired eight consecutive batters to begin the evening and set down seven in a row to close out his performance.
Danny Meszaros shined out of the bullpen, holding the Missions to two hits over four innings. He issued a walk and a strikeout while tossing 32 of his 48 pitches for strikes.
The Hooks finish the road portion of their 2009 schedule with a four-game series at Frisco's Dr Pepper Ballpark. Lefty Tyler Lumsden (1-3) is the scheduled starter for Corpus Christi in the opener Tuesday night.
