Arkansas Travelers News Release

Springfield, MO - The resilient Springfield Cardinals countered two big Travs innings in a 10-8 win on Thursday night at Hammons Field.

Arkansas plated three runs in the first inning just to see Springfield come back with three in the bottom of the first, and trailing 6-3 in the sixth, the Travs scored five in the inning but the Cards replied with four to retake the lead.

The big blow for the Cardinals came off the bat of LF Anthony Garcia in the sixth. With one out and runners on first and second and the Travs up 8-7, Garcia blasted a three-run home run off RHP Austin Wood (L, 8-5) to put Springfield up 10-8.

Arkansas scored its five runs in the sixth on six straight hits to start the frame. 1B/3B Brian Hernandez began the inning with a blast off the auxiliary scoreboard well beyond the left field fence, his sixth of the year, to cut the Travs deficit to 6-4. After a RF Blake Gailen double and DH Michael Snyder single put runners on the corners, LF Ruben Sosa pushed an RBI bunt single towards first to make it a 6-5 game. A C Anthony Bemboom bunt single and throwing error tied the game 8-8 and pinch-hitter Raywilly Gomez put the Travs up 8-6 with a two-run double to right-center, all before the first out in the inning was made.

The three Travs runs in the first scored after the first two batters in the inning were retired.

Gailen finished 3-for-4 with a walk, two doubles, two runs and an RBI.

Hernandez went 2-for-4 with the home run, a walk and two runs scored. Hernandez now has six longballs and 63 RBIs this season.

Snyder finished 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs.

CF Chad Hinshaw extended his consecutive games on-base streak to 17 with a 2-for-5 night.

Travs starting pitcher RHP Chris Ellis worked five innings and allowed six runs (four earned) on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Ellis left in line for the victory.

RHP Kyle Winkler worked two scoreless frames after Wood pitched the sixth.

With the loss, Arkansas' lead in the Texas League North fell to two games over the Cardinals.

Game two of the four-game series is scheduled for Friday night with first pitch at 7:10 p.m.
