Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - After the Arkansas Travelers had scored five in the top of the sixth, the Springfield Cardinals battled back with four runs in the bottom of the sixth en route to the 10-8 victory before 4,198 fans at Hammons Field on Thursday night.
The Travelers (23-18, 59-51) got out to a quick start against LHP Jimmy Reed with three runs in the top of the first frame. Reed retired the first two outs in quick order, but CF Chad Hinshaw singled to keep the inning alive. 1B Brian Hernandez worked a walk next, before an RBI base hit by RF Blake Gailen to crack the scoreless tie. DH Michael Snyder followed with a two-run double, plating Hernandez and Gailen for the 3-0 Arkansas advantage.
The Cardinals (21-20, 51-60), though, returned the favor with three runs of their own against RHP Chris Ellis in the bottom of the first. CF Charlie Tilson started the stanza with a walk, before stealing his league-best 37th base of the year. LF Nick Martini filled up first base with a free pass of his own, before DH Anthony Garcia pulled an RBI single through the left side to score Tilson and move Martini to third, with Garcia taking second on the throw home on the play. 1B Jonathan Rodriguez promptly plated Martini and advanced Garcia to third base with a long RBI sacrifice fly to left-center field. 3B Bruce Caldwell came up with the game-tying RBI single to shallow left field, bringing home Garcia from third base to square the score, 3-3.
After Reed posted a quick 1-2-3 top of the second, Springfield swung in front in the bottom of the second. With one down, 2B Breyvic Valera reached with a walk. After moving to second base on a groundout, Valera advanced to third on an infield single by Tilson. With Martini at the plate, the Cardinals pulled off a successful double steal. Tilson broke first for second base, drawing a throw from C Anthony Bemboom and allowing Valera to charge home from third base and just beat the return throw home, lifting Springfield into the 4-3 lead.
The Cardinals kept swinging away against Ellis with two more runs in the bottom of the third. After Caldwell had reached on a fielder's choice, SS Aledmys Diaz clobbered a two-run home run to left field, his eighth long-ball of the year, increasing the Springfield lead to 6-3.
Reed kept the Cardinals three-run lead intact through the fourth and fifth, but Arkansas raced in front in the top of the sixth. Leading off the inning, Hernandez skied a solo shot to left field, cutting the Travs deficit to 6-4. Gailen then followed the blast with a double, before Snyder singled to chase Reed from the mound. With LHP Ryan Sherriff (W, 1-1) taking over, LF Ruben Sosa placed an RBI bunt single to reach base and bring home Gailen. Bemboom followed with a bunt single of his own, which led to a throwing error charged to Caldwell as he fired the ball wide of first, enabling Snyder to score on the overthrow. Pinch-hitting C Raywilly Gomez brought in both runners with a two-run double to right-center field, lifting the Travelers into the 8-6 lead.
The Cardinals once again charged right back in front, rallying against RHP Austin Wood (L, 8-5) in the bottom of the sixth. Valera started the stanza with his second walk of the night, before racing around to third on a single from C Alberto Rosario. Tilson then ripped an RBI single to right field, bringing home Valera and putting two men on for Garcia. With one big swing, Garcia lifted Springfield back in front, crushing a three-run home run to left-center for the 10-8 lead.
Sherriff started the seventh with a strikeout, before exiting after a double. RHP Corey Baker took over and got the Cardinals out of the seventh, before striking out the side in the eighth to keep the Cardinals lead intact through his 1.2 perfect innings.
RHP Ronnie Shaban (S, 5) took over for the ninth and worked around a pair of singles to post a scoreless final frame, closing the hard-fought 10-8 win for the Cardinals.
