Springfield Cardinals News Release

Springfield, MO - The Springfield Cardinals struck for four runs in the bottom of the second and never looked back en route to the 6-3 win against the Corpus Christi Hooks, before 3,093 fans at Hammons Field on Friday night.

The Cardinals (3-5) began the big second inning against RHP Matt Heidenreich (L, 0-1) with a perfectly-placed bunt single by LF Chris Swauger, igniting the offense. After a RF Adam Melker walk, CF Tommy Pham drove in both runners with a two-run triple to right-center field. C Travis Tartamella followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to left, plating Pham. 2B Starlin Rodriguez quickly swung himself to scoring position with a double, before coming in on an RBI single to center by DH Mike O'Neill, capping the rally at 4-0.

The Hooks (6-2) attempted a comeback in the top of the fifth after four scoreless innings by LHP Anthony Ferrara. C Rene Garcia started the stanza against Ferrara with a leadoff double, moving to third on a bunt single by 1B Ben Orloff. LF Austin Wates singled home Garcia, and then a fielding miscue on SS Jake Lemmerman loaded the bases with no outs. After CF George Springer connected with a two-run double, LHP Kevin Siegrist (W, 1-1) took over on the mound. Siegrist dealt back-to-back strikeouts, before inducing an inning-ending fly out to center, escaping the frame with the Cardinals in front, 4-3.

Springfield wasted no time in stretching the lead back out. With one on and two down in the bottom of the fifth, 1B Xavier Scruggs hammered a low fly ball over the right field wall, giving the Cards some breathing room, 6-3.

After Siergrist's two frames, RHP Deryk Hooker and RHP Michael Blazek both contributed a scoreless inning apiece. RHP Keith Butler (S, 3) then dealt a scoreless ninth, closing the 6-3 win for the Cardinals.
