The Fort Collins, Colorado native made his Major League debut on June 25, 2014 when he was called up directly from Springfield to start against the Colorado Rockies. Gonzales went on to post a 4-2 record with a 4.15 ERA through 10 games and five starts to help the Cardinals capture the Central Division crown last season. He then appeared in six playoff games last year and went 2-1 with a 4.50 ERA out of the bullpen.

Prior to being called up to St. Louis, Gonzales had dominated the Texas League with a 3-2 record and a 2.33 ERA through seven starts, earning a selection to the Texas League All-Star Game. He had started the 2014 season, his first full professional campaign, in Palm Beach and made six High-A starts before his Double-A debut on May 17, 2014.

Gonzales entered the 2015 season ranked by Baseball America as the top prospect in the Cardinals system. He was St. Louis's 1st round pick (19th overall) in the 2013 June Draft out of Gonzaga University.
