Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
Jupiter, FL - The Palm Beach Cardinals came one out away from history on Tuesday night, taking a combination no-hitter into the ninth inning as they cruised past the Jupiter Hammerheads 9-0 at Roger Dean Stadium. The Cardinals have won 10 of their last 12 games.
Tyrell Jenkins, Sam Tuivailala and Corey Baker combined for the one-hit shutout for the Cardinals.
With two away in the ninth inning, Colin Moran broke up the no-hit bid with a bloop single to center that fell just in front of a charging Charlie Tilson. The combination no-no would have been the first team no-hitter since Daytona completed the feat on August 24, 1996 behind the arm of Cubs great Kerry Wood.
Jenkins was terrific on the mound in his first professional start since July 6, 2013. The Cardinals 17th-best prospect suffered a shoulder injury while pitching for Palm Beach last season.
He showed no signs of rust.
Jenkins (1-0) tossed six scoreless innings, allowed two walks and fanned three. The right-hander pitched to the minimum through four innings before the Sharks got runners on base due to an error and a walk in the fifth.
Tuivailala entered in relief in the seventh inning and struck out four batters over two hitless frames. Baker fanned one and retired the first two batters in the ninth before Moran's heart-breaking single.
The Cardinals (36-33) were firing on all cylinders on Tuesday night, getting huge production at the plate as well. Luke Voit went 4-for-5 with a run and two RBI while Breyvic Valera chipped in three hits, scored a run and drove in two.
Overall the Birds turned in a 15-hit outburst and put on a hitting clinic in the fifth and sixth innings. Charlie Tilson and Ildemaro Vargas singled and scored the first two runs of the game in the fifth on a Valera RBI groundout and a Voit RBI single.
Palm Beach added to the 2-0 advantage with seven runs on six hits and two errors in the sixth. Valera, Voit, David Washington, Alex Mejia, and Nick Martini each drove in runs in the frame.
Adam Conley (0-1) allowed six runs - three earned - on nine hits over 5.1 innings in his first start of the year for Jupiter.
The Cardinals look to take control of the 2014 Fins vs. Feathers series on Wednesday night at Roger Dean Stadium. A win would give them a 5-4 advantage in the series. RH Joe Cuda (4-5, 6.58) will start for Palm Beach against RH Austin Brice (4-5, 3.50) for Jupiter. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
Following the game, members of both teams along with Roger Dean Stadium staff had their heads shaved to support the Vs. Cancer Foundation. More than $7,500 was raised for the event. Cardinals players that participated were Jesus Montero, Jimmy Bosco, Nick Martini, Joe Cuda, Charlie Tilson, Bruce Caldwell, Iden Nazario and Alex Mejia.
