Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (June 16, 2014) - The Stone Crabs have found success against some of the best opposing pitchers in the league this season. One of them, Mets lefthander Steven Matz, was 0-1 in his first two starts against Charlotte as the teams split the first six meetings in the season series. The story was different on Monday night at Tradition Field, however, and Matz rediscovered his All-Star form with six strong innings in a 6-2 Mets victory.

Scoreless in the home second, Brandon Nimmo twisted a one out triple into the left field corner over the outstretched leap of Josh Sale. Two batters later, Cam Maron's RBI single gave the Mets a 1-0 lead. A single by Maikis De La Cruz brought up the ninth hitter Eudy Pina, who sent a sinking line drive into left. Sale's late break and head first diving attempt were both unsuccessful, and the ball rolled behind for a two-run double and a 3-0 advantage.

Tommy Coyle opened the fourth against Matz with an infield single before Leonardo Reginatto grounded into a fielder's choice. After Reginatto stole second, a walk to Patrick Leonard and a single by Luke Bailey loaded the bases for Kes Carter. He pulled a hard single into right to get the Stone Crabs on the board at 3-1 before Jonathan Quionez grounded into a force out at third to score Leonard and make it 3-2. With runners at first and second, Sale sent a hard liner directly to the right fielder Pina, who made the catch to end the inning. It was the closest the `Crabs would get for the remainder of the evening.

The Mets got a run back right away after Santiago walked Aderlin Rodrguez to open the fourth. With one out, De La Cruz blopped a single down the right field line over the head of Quionez. He threw to third in an attempt to get Rodriguez for the second out, but the ball skipped over Tyler Goeddel's mitt for an error and another Mets run. Matz surrendered a leadoff infield single to Julian Ridings in the fifth, but he'd retire the next six hitters in a row before turning it over to the bullpen for the seventh.

Santiago's final inning in the sixth started with a walk to Nimmo and a bunt single by Rodriguez. After Cam Maron flied out to right for the first out, De La Cruz continued his impressive evening with an RBI single into right field to put the Mets up 5-2. They added the final run in the seventh after Nimmo's RBI double down the left field line off newcomer Casey Weathers. The Stone Crabs final opportunity came in the eighth off Paul Sewald, starting with Reginatto's double down the right field line. With two outs, Carter walked on five pitches to bring up Quionez, who grounded out to short off Rondy Fontanez, who came in and got the final four outs to end the ballgame.
