CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers' offense had a rough go of it against the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Monday night, falling 7-1 at Bright House Field.

Ryan Demmin took the mound for the Threshers after a 53-minute rain delay. The Florida State League Pitcher of the Week ran into trouble in the third, allowing the Flying Tigers to scratch across the first run of the game.

After allowing a one-out double to Tyler Hanover, Demmin gave up a single to Chad Wright to put runners on the corners. Curt Powell plated Hanover with a groundout to short to give Lakeland the 1-0 lead.

Demmin surrendered two more runs on a one-out double in the fourth inning to put the Threshers in a 3-0 hole.

Demmin (1-1) would still get a quality start for his performance. The Threshers' starter gave up the three runs on seven hits in six innings of work while adding seven strikeouts and one walk.

Dan Child came on to work the seventh for Demmin and got out of a bases-loaded jam, but would run into more trouble in the eighth.

After allowing the first two men to reach, Child would give up a one-out double, walk, and sacrifice fly to put Clearwater down 5-0.

The Threshers struggled to put anything together off of the Flying Tigers' starter Edgar De La Rosa (4-4).

Clearwater could only put five men on base through seven innings and struck out seven times against the righty.

Harold Martinez made his first appearance since suffering a rib injury on June 16 and went 2-for-4 on the night.

Clearwater (16-51) pushed across a run in the eight to cut into Lakeland's lead.

Angelo Mora launched a 3-2 pitch into the left-centerfield gap for a one-out double. Mora would move to third on a groundout by Roman Quinn and come around to score on a wild pitch to Brian Pointer.

Kevin Walter would come on in the ninth and allow Lakeland (42-24) to put up two more runs and stretch its lead to 7-1.

The Threshers were able to put two men aboard in the ninth with two-out singles by Chris Serritella and Martinez, but the runners would be left stranded as Art Charles grounded out to end the game.

The Threshers will look to even the series against the Flying Tigers Tuesday night with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 6:45 p.m.
