Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - The Northwest Arkansas Naturals exploded for four runs in the fourth inning to defeat the Springfield Cardinals 4-3 in the first game of their four-game series.
The Cards would get on the scoreboard first after a perched hawk caused a brief delay in the first, with Greg Garcia's bases-loaded double down the left field line to make the score 2-0.
The Naturals did their damage with a four-run inning in the top of the fourth. Mario Lisson, Ray Navarro, and Sharlon Schoop hit back-to-back-to-back RBI singles to right field. The Naturals made it 4-2 after Nick Van Stratton's grounder eluded Cardinals' third baseman Jose Garcia's glove for an error.
Springfield starter Richard Castillo (4-1) gave up seven hits in six innings, with three earned runs. He earned the loss while striking out four and walking two. He was charged with one unearned run on Jose Garcia's error. Deryk Hooker pitched a perfect seventh inning, while Eric Fornataro gave up three hits and no runs over two innings of work.
Xavier Scruggs added a solo homerun for the Cardinals in the bottom of the eighth off reliever Patrick Keating to cut the lead to one. Scruggs went 2-for-3 with a walk.
Natural's starter Michael Mariot (3-2) earned the win, giving up seven hits and two earned runs over five innings of work. He walked one and struck out six. Ryan Dennick pitched the ninth, only giving up one walk to earn his second save of the season.
Buddy Baumann was solid in relief, giving up two hits and walking one over two and a third innings. After allowing the first two batters to reach base in the bottom of the sixth, he struck out Audry Perez, Greg Garcia, and Kolten Wong in order to end the inning.
The Cardinals managed to get runners on base every inning, but found difficulty bringing them in. They stranded ten runners over the course of the game, and were 2-for-11 with RISP overall.
Springfield will continue their four-game series with the NW Arkansas Naturals tomorrow night at 7:08pm. The Cardinals will send Carlos Martinez to the mound in his AA Debut against All-Star, Justin Marks of the Naturals.
Every Friday at Hammons Field is an AM Pyrotechnics Friday Night Fireworks night. Don't miss your chance to see some fireworks on and above the field!
