Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Infielders Jose Martinez, Jon Singleton and Jonathan Villar, outfielder Austin Wates and pitchers Kevin Chapman, Brett Oberholtzer and Jason Stoffel have been selected to the Texas League South Division All-Star Team, announced today by league president Tom Kayser.
The North and South All-Stars meet in the 76th Texas League All-Star Game Thursday, June 28, at Tulsa's ONEOK Field.
Martinez, Singleton and Wates were all voted onto the squad as starters. Martinez gets the nod at second base while Singleton is the designated hitter. Wates, chosen as one of the three starting outfielders, is currently on the disabled list with a quad injury and has been replaced in the starting lineup by Midland's Shane Peterson.
Martinez, 26, ranks second among all Texas League second baseman in fielding percentage (.990) and ranks among the league leaders in average (.319, 2nd) and RBIs (42, 4th). He was Corpus Christi's defensive player of the month in April, when he handled 103 chances without making an error. Martinez enters play tonight at Frisco with a 12-game hitting streak, his second of the year, and has hit safely in 24 of his last 25 games.
Singleton, 20, leads the circuit in runs scored (47), stands fourth in walks (41) and ranks fifth in RBIs (40). Corpus Christi's offensive player of the month in May (.281-7-24, .931 OPS), Singleton has been selected as the loop's Player of the Week (May 21-27) and enters tonight's action having drawn 14 walks in his last 14 games. Baseball America pegged Singleton pre-season as the top prospect in the Astros organization.
Wates, 23, has missed six of the last seven games with his leg injury and was placed on the disabled list yesterday. Prior to the injury, Wates was among the league leaders in hits and has posted a .305 batting average in 56 games with 24 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.
Villar, 21, selected as a reserve infielder, leads the league with 29 steals and has come on strong over the last three weeks. In his last 20 games, Villar is batting .333 (26x78) with four home runs, 21 runs and 15 RBIs. For the season, the shortstop, picked by Baseball America as Houston's fourth-best prospect, is batting .264 with 38 runs and 28 RBIs.
Chapman, 24, tops all Texas League relievers with a 10.48 SO/9 IP ratio and is tied for fourth in the loop in appearances (26). In his first year in the Houston system, Chapman is 4-2 with a 2.22 ERA. He was Corpus Christi's pitcher of the month in April, going 1-1 with a 1.38 ERA, with 19 strikeouts in 13.0 innings.
Oberholtzer, 22, is 5-3 with a 4.44 ERA in 12 starts for the Hooks. Over his last five starts Oberholtzer, selected by Baseball America as the #7 prospect in the Astros organization, is 4-1 with a 2.27 ERA.
Stoffel, 23, is tied for fourth in the league with nine saves. Those nine saves have come in nine chances over 25 appearances. Stoffel leads all Texas League relievers in fewest walks allowed per nine innings (1.29) and fewest base runners allowed per nine innings (8.04). He also ranks second among relievers in opponents' batting average (.194). Corpus Christi's closer is 0-1 with a 1.29 ERA.
Balloting was conducted among league managers, broadcasters, selected beat writers and media relations directors.
