Springfield Cardinals News Release
Midland, TX - The Springfield Cardinals wrapped up the series win with a 7-2 victory against the Midland RockHounds before 3,567 fans at Security Bank Ballpark on Sunday afternoon. Springfield finished the Texas road trip with an even 3-3 record.
The Cardinals (17-33) opened an early advantage with a run in the top of the second against LHP Chris Lamb (L, 0-4). With one down, RF David Washington pulled a base hit through the right side. He moved to second on a sharp single to center by 3B Patrick Wisdom, before both runners advanced ninety feet on a wild pitch from Lamb. With two on and one away, 2B Bruce Caldwell brought in Washington with an RBI groundout to first base, lifting Springfield into the 1-0 lead.
After RHP Corey Baker tossed a second straight scoreless inning in the bottom of the second, the Cardinals added three more runs to the lead in the top of the third. CF Nick Martini sparked the rally with a one-out walk, before racing all the way home on an RBI triple by DH Jeremy Hazelbaker. LF Anthony Garcia then worked a walk to put runners at the corners, followed by an RBI groundout from 1B Jonathan Rodriguez, enabling Hazelbaker to charge home from third base. With Garcia on at second and two down, Washington pulled an RBI single to right-center, plating Garcia to make it 4-0.
Springfield kept swinging away against Lamb in the top of the fourth. With two down, C Alberto Rosario extended the inning with a ground-rule double to left field. Martini promptly ripped an RBI double of his own to right-center, bringing in Rosario. Hazelbaker then belted a towering two-run home run to right field for the 7-0 lead.
After 3.2 scoreless innings in the spot start, Baker gave way to LHP Lee Stoppelman in the bottom of the fourth. Stoppelman found the final out in the fourth inning, but Midland (26-24) got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. With one away, 2B Colin Walsh and RF Matt Olson worked a pair of walks. After a pop out, both runners raced home on a two-out, two-run double from SS Chad Pinder, cutting the Cardinals lead to 7-2.
In his first outing back from Memphis (Triple-A), RHP Kurt Heyer (W, 1-0) got the Cardinals out of the rest of the fifth with no further damage being done, before blanking the RockHounds in the sixth. With two on and two down in the seventh, Heyer handed it to LHP Iden Nazario, who promptly retired LF Jaycob Brugman to keep it at 7-2 through seven frames.
Nazario worked around a double to post a scoreless eighth inning as well, before giving way to RHP Chris Thomas for the bottom of the ninth. Thomas slammed the door with a perfect final frame, closing the Cardinals 7-2 victory and 2-games-to-1 series win.
