Frisco RoughRiders News Release
FRISCO, TEXAS (May 31, 2015) -Frisco starter Jake Thompson pitched eight stellar innings to help the Riders win a 2-1 ballgame over the Tulsa Drillers on Sunday afternoon at Dr Pepper Ballpark. Patrick Cantwell hit a go-ahead RBI double in the fifth inning to snap a tie game and send Frisco to its third straight series victory.
Tulsa (20-27) scored a run in the first inning on three hits including Lars Anderson's RBI double. Anderson snapped a 12-game RBI drought with the base hit.
The Riders (21-29) were held hitless until the fourth inning when Nick Williams led off with a triple down the right field line. One batter later, Williams crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Edwin Garcia. In the fifth inning, Drew Robinson worked a two-out walk and Cantwell delivered with a run-scoring double. Cantwell has recorded a hit in each of his last three games, matching his longest hitting streak of the season.
Thompson (5-3) earned the victory for the Riders as the Rockwall, Texas native struck out eight Drillers and allowed only one run on six hits over eight innings. Sunday marked the first time in 2015 a Riders starter completed eight innings.
Tulsa had two on and one out when Thompson got a crucial double play to end the fourth inning, and he worked around a leadoff triple in the fifth. Thompson threw exactly 100 pitches en route to his third consecutive win.
Drillers starting pitcher Randy Fontanez (0-1) pitched four and two thirds innings before exiting following the double to Cantwell. After not allowing a hit through three frames, the Riders scratched across two runs in consecutive innings to knock Fontanez out of the game.
David Martinez pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his third save. After starting the season 0-and-11 in series finales, Frisco has won three straight and has won nine of its last 13 games.
After an off-day on Monday the Riders will hit the road for a six-game trip through Springfield and Tulsa. Chad Bell gets the start on Tuesday night for Frisco against the Cardinals in the 7:10 contest. The RoughRiders return to Dr Pepper Ballpark on June 9 to face the San Antonio Missions. The team will host a "Full House Night" with special uniforms depicting scenes from the classic '90s sitcom on Friday, June 12.
