Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

Jupiter, FL - The Palm Beach Cardinals were on the short end of a good old fashioned pitcher's duel against the St. Lucie Mets on Thursday night, falling 2-0 at Roger Dean Stadium. The loss drops the Cardinals into second place in the Florida State League South Division standings with just three games remaining in the 2014 regular season. The Bradenton Marauders are alone in first after a ninth inning comeback win against Charlotte on Thursday.

The Cardinals (39-28, 75-61) and the Mets (34-32, 74-61) each got great efforts from their respective starters as the teams took a scoreless draw into the sixth inning.

Palm Beach starter Silfredo Garcia cruised through five innings before allowing two runs in the top half of the sixth. Gavin Cecchini drew a walk and L.J. Mazzilli followed with a single to start the inning for the Mets. Both touched home thanks to a Jared King RBI single and a Phillip Evans sacrifice fly to help St. Lucie go ahead 2-0.

Garcia (7-4) would be done after the sixth after surrendering the two runs. He scattered five hits, walked one and struck out four on the night. He was charged with the loss despite the quality start.

Luis Cessa (7-8) was even better for St. Lucie on top of the mound. The right-hander spun 6.2 shutout frames, allowed five hits, walked one and fanned five en route to the winning decision.

Logan Billbrough and Dixon Llorens combined for three scoreless innings of relief for the Cardinals but the offense could never get going.

Bruce Caldwell was the lone Cardinal to turn in a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 on the evening.

The same two teams will square off again on Friday night in what will be the Cardinals last remaining regular season home game. LH Jimmy Reed (6-1, 3.49) will start for Palm Beach against RH Seth Lugo (7-3, 4.32) for St. Lucie. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
