Clearwater Threshers News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - Brandon Short was a late addition to the lineup, but he made all the difference as the Clearwater Threshers topped the Tampa Yankees in 11 innings, 9-7, at George M. Steinbrenner Field on Wednesday night.
Short plated the tying run in a three-run ninth with an RBI single with two outs and pushed across two more runs in the 11th to complete the comeback for the Threshers.
Clearwater (27-38) fought back in the ninth with three runs to tie up the ball game.
J.P. Crawford shot a ball through the left side for a one-out single and moved to second on a Brian Pointer walk.
Art Charles ripped a double off the right-field wall to bring in Crawford and draw Clearwater within two. Chris Serritella's sacrifice fly scored Pointer and set the stage for Short.
With Anthony Phillips pinch running for Charles, Short grounded an RBI single up the middle to bring in the tying run.
Ulises Joaquin (2-1) set down the Yankees in the ninth to send the game into extras.
Crawford led off the 11th with a single to left and would move to second when Pointer drew a walk.
Phillips laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners 90 feet. Serritella followed with a lineout to left to set the stage yet again for Short.
Short made Phillip Walby (0-1) pay with a two-RBI single to center and give the Threshers a 9-7 advantage.
Joaquin took the mound in the bottom half for his third inning of work. He allowed a leadoff double to Cito Culver, but would settle back in and retire the next three batters to end the game.
Jordan Guth took the mound for the Threshers and struggled through his 4.1 innings of work. The right-handed hurler allowed five runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out one.
The Threshers will look to take the series from the Yankees as the two teams head to Bright House Field for Clearwater's last home game of the season on Thursday night. Game time is set for 7 p.m. and can be heard live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 6:45 p.m.
