Marauders Steal Game One 5-3

Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL (August 28, 2014) - The turnaround between Wednesday night's game in Port St. Lucie and Thursday night's game in Port Charlotte may have seemed too quick for the Stone Crabs. The same script had been written as they took a 3-2 lead into the ninth of both games, forcing the opponent to come back while down to their final three outs. The Mets did it with one swing the first time around because of an error, despite being down to their final strike. This time, Bradenton hammered away and took their first and only lead with three runs in the frame to secure game one with a 5-3 victory in front of a crowd of 2,012 at Charlotte Sports Park.
Jaime Schultz received second billing in a starting pitching matchup against Marauders ace Tyler Glasnow, the Florida State League Pitcher of the Year. In one of the most evenly fought battles this year, Schultz actually left with the advantage despite departing after five. Glasnow was his usual self by posting nine strikeouts across six innings, but his offense did little to back him up early on.
Marty Gantt bounced a two out single into center and was on the move to second when Granden Goetzman twirled a single into right field. The ball moved with topspin and caused a problem for Walker Gourley, who knocked it down with his free hand. The bobble, plus Gantt's sprint through Jared Sandberg's stop sign, were both timely as the `Crabs capitalized on the error to take a 1-0 lead.
Schultz didn't surrender his first hit until Jose Osuna lined a single into left with one out in the fourth. Schultz, a recent selection for the Arizona Fall League, responded by striking out both Jordan Steranka and Eric Wood for the last two outs. In the home fourth, Maxx Tissenbaum cracked a first pitch fastball for a leadoff single. With one out, Tyler Goeddel sat on Glasnow's heater and soared a two run blast off the very top of the left field wall for his sixth home run and a 3-0 advantage.
Bradenton bounced back in the fifth when Jacob Stallings snuck an RBI double under the glove of a diving Gantt in right to make it 3-1. Schultz walked the ninth hitter Justin Maffei to put the tying runs on, but closed out his final start by striking out the next two hitters to finish with seven. Osuna opened the sixth against Jose Molina with a double, and quickly came in to score on another double from Justin Howard with two outs.
Facing their last three outs in a must win game, the Marauders got a leadoff walk from Wood against Zach Cooper (0-3) in the ninth. A passed ball got him to second and allowed Howard to drive in the tying run with a triple to the right field wall. Moroff bounced a single off the mound into center to give the Marauders their first lead at 4-3, and Stallings put it away for good with a long home run off the scoreboard in left for the 5-3 win.
