Lake County Captains News Release
(Comstock Park, MI) - The Lake County Captains (62-48) supplied base runners but did not drive enough home. The West Michigan Whitecaps (60-52) jumped back into first in the Midwest League East Second Half Standings with a 4-1 win on a sunny Friday night at LMCU Ballpark.
Lake County in the first three innings, had ample opportunities to score. Milan Tolentino doubled in the first and reach third but was stranded. Christian Cairo walked in the second, reached second base but no further, and Korey Holland reached on an error, stole second base but was left in scoring position to end the third inning.
Tommy Mace worked three scoreless innings, including a 1-2-3 first. The Whitecaps plated all their runs in the fourth. Back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out. Carlos Mendoza chopped one to third and the only throw to be made was to first. With two outs, Eduardo Valencia stepped up next searching for his first High-A hit and delivered with a three-run blast off the scoreboard in deep left to make it 4-0. Mace would work a clean fifth to end his day.
In the final four frames, the Captains marooned five men. In the ninth, Lake County had the first two batters reach, Petey Halpin with a walk and Christian Cairo with a single, his second hit of the contest. A groundout moved both runners into scoring position. An error from the West Michigan defense brought the lone Captains tally.
Angel Martinez as the potential tying runner came up to the plate. He drilled a ball into right field that was caught to end the game. The 20-year-old had his 27-game on-base streak snapped, tied for the second-longest for a Lake County Captain this year.
The fifth game of the six-game set between Lake County and West Michigan is tomorrow Saturday, August 20th with first pitch at 6:35 p.m.
